Why do coated plastic tubes have to be used for serum collection instead of neutral ones? The surface of a plastic tube does not promote coagulation. In a plastic tube without coating it takes a long time for the blood to clot. Because of this, the inner walls of tubes are sprayed with a clot activator, which activates the coagulation cascade. What is the clot activator? The silica particles that coat the walls of Serum Tubes are the clot activator. Initial activation occurs when blood enters the tube and contacts the particles on the tube wall. To continue the activation process, it is necessary to thoroughly mix the blood and particles by inverting the tube a number of times. Why Gel Tube? Serum till last drop Is it possible to freeze serum tubes? Serum Tubes can be frozen; to -20°C without affecting the tube. Tubes with gel can be frozen to -20°C without affecting the function of the gel. What is the difference between serum and plasma? Serum is devoid of clotting factors but is enriched with the cellular components of platelets and metabolic products. Plasma is the virtually cell free supernatant following centrifugation of whole blood, the coagulability of which is inhibited by the addition of heparin immediately after sampling. What does the gel in serum/plasma tubes consist of? The main component is olefinoligomer Non-toxic neutral thixotrophic polymer Biocompatible Can I recentrifuge serum gel tubes? It is not recommended to re-centrifuge tubes once the barrier has been formed. The re-centrifugation of tubes can lead to possible impairment of the gel barrier, causing gel particles to separate and appear in the serum or plasma. Stability of blood cells in EDTA Erythrocytes, leucocytes and thrombocytes are stable in EDTA anticoagulated blood for up to 24 hours. Blood smearing should be done within 3 hours of blood collection. What is the effect of an insufficient draw? Addition of too little blood leads to high EDTA concentrations in the whole blood. Allowing for a possible deviation from the correct value by up to 10% is acceptable. What special handling steps should be considered when using EDTA tubes? Specimen handling steps • Thorough mixing of the blood sample for proper additive performance is a prerequisite. Incomplete mixing may lead to partial coagulation of the blood sample. If the tube is shaken too vigorously frothing may occur and lead to damage of the corpuscular components. • Volume of blood drawn must be +/-10% of the proclaimed fill volume. Why Li-Heparinized Tubes? No waiting time => Quick separation Chances of Hemolysis => Very Less No interference for Routine biochemistry & Electrolyte estimation Why do the inside walls of the Tubes appear white and cloudy? Are the tubes still all right to use? The walls of Labtech Serum Separation Tubes are coated with silica particles as a clot activator. The coating process creates a film on the tube surface that appears white and slightly cloudy. The tubes are absolutely fine to use. However, it is important to remember to invert the Tube at least five times after filling. This assures adequate mixing of silica particles with the blood, which is required for optimal performance. How soon after collection should gel tubes be centrifuged? Gel separation tubes should be centrifuged no earlier than 30min. & no later than 2 hours after collection. What is a safety tube closure? The Labtech safety tube closure has a unique rubber stopper that seals Blood Collection Tubes. It is recessed within and covered by a plastic shield to help protect laboratory personnel from contact with blood on the stopper or around the outer rim of the tube. The tube closure also helps prevent blood from splattering when the tube is opened.
