About Us

Since 1896 Landis+Gyr (originally known as "Electrotechnishes Institut Theiler and Co.") has been designing and manufacturing high quality, state of the art electricity meters. Based in Zug, Switzerland, the company had access to a highly skilled workforce and distribution system throughout Europe. In 1924 the company expanded globally with the establishment its first overseas office in New York.

1981 saw the advent of electronic meters and Landis+Gyr was there at the forefront, developing and launching its first range of digital meters in the industrial and commercial segments.

Through the late 90s the company saw a series of different investors and owners, including Elektrowatt, KKR and Siemens. In 2004 Bayard Capital of Australia purchased the company with a vision of building the premier energy management company in the world that would combine positive environmental outcomes with the company's culture.

Since Bayard's acquisition other companies have been added to the Group, creating the world's leading powerhouse in energy metering solutions. Today Landis+Gyr has operations spanning more than 30 countries and serving all of the major utilities in every continent.

Belgian grid operator ORES takes step closer to developing smart metering infrastructure with decisi [13-DEC-10]
Zug, Switzerland, 13 December, 2010 – Landis+Gyr, the global leader in energy management solutions, will supply ORES with its Gridstream solution, which includes software, the AIM system that runs on PLC technology as well as 1250 smart meters. 250 of these homes will have smart electricity meters as well as smart gas meters- which will use a common communications link from the home to seamlessly send multi-energy data back to the utility. The first phase of the pilot project is due to be complete in Spring 2011, with 100 smart meters installed in the city of Nivelles and a further 100 installed in Marche-en-Famenne.

This pilot project is a key step forward regarding the development of a smart future in Belgium. It will enable us to identify the benefits that smart metering has to offer and to check end consumer behaviour regarding this new technology,” says Marc Van Eeckhout, Pilot Project Manager at ORES.

ORES is also considering introducing the ecoMeter from Landis+Gyr to selected parts of the pilot project once the first phase is completed at the end of this year. In-home displays give the end consumer the opportunity to directly influence their energy consumption through the provision of real-time information on energy pricing.

Smart metering is the only way to lay a solid foundation of a smart grid environment in Belgium,” says Stephan Vandecasteele, Head of Landis+Gyr in Belgium, “We are certain that this project will once again show that smart metering brings benefits all along the metering value chain, and to society as a whole. We welcome this opportunity to work with ORES and to deliver these benefits to Belgian consumers.

The pilot project is due to be complete by mid 2011. ORES is partly municipality-owned and has a total of 1.4 million metering points, all located in the south of Belgium. In total, Belgium has 5.5 million metering points. ORES is the second largest grid operator in the country.

Results from this pilot project will flow into an economic analysis that the Kingdom of Belgium will submit to the EU regarding smart metering in 2012. Factors analysed will include the status of the smart metering technology, operational efficiency, flexibility in terms of usage by the end consumer and the overall business case, including the projected total cost of a nationwide rollout.

The EU recently announced its Energy Infrastructure Package, which cites the expedited rollout of smart metering as a key step in achieving its 2020 goals. Smart meters and power grids are highlighted as the key to realizing the full potential for renewable energy and energy savings, and as essential to the smooth functioning of the European energy market and to the security of energy supply.

Founding Partner in "Biggest Energy Saver" Effort Showcased at White House [13-JUN-11]
Washington, DC – June 13, 2011 -- Landis+Gyr, the leading global energy management solutions provider, today joined Aneesh Chopra, United States Chief Technology Officer, and Energy Secretary Dr Steven Chu at the first White House Grid Modernization Event as a founding partner in the Biggest Energy Saver Campaign, a national program aimed at promoting energy conservation among U.S. electricity consumers.

The campaign, operated by Grid 21, a new non-profit committed to helping consumers manage energy better, brings together the most innovative leaders in the smart grid industry.

Landis+Gyr is partnering with Texas-based utilities Oncor and CenterPoint Energy, as well as San Diego Gas and Electric in California to launch the Biggest Energy Saver Campaign.

The comprehensive campaign is the first and largest of its kind in the nation and is aimed at demonstrating the benefits of using information from smart meters, powerful two-way communications devices that allow utilities and consumers to track energy consumption in real-time.

As a founding partner, Landis+Gyr has actively participated in the program’s design and launch. The Biggest Energy Saver Campaign will feature a customer-savings contest sponsored by Grid21. The campaign will drive the creation and use of customer-friendly tools for managing home energy consumption. By giving consumers easy ways to read and understand the data provided by smart meters, the Biggest Energy Saver program will help consumers make more educated decisions about their energy use.

A second component of the Biggest Energy Saver contest is a nationwide call to create software applications that will enable consumers to better monitor and reduce home energy consumption. In Texas, software application developers will be vying for prizes up to $150,000. Landis+Gyr is helping lead the application developer program, given its unrivaled record for innovation and software interoperability with partners and developers.

At the White House event, Landis+Gyr’s Chief Operating Office for North America Jerry Figuirilli said: “Landis+Gyr is proud to be a part of this nationwide effort, supporting our utility clients as they engage energy consumers to manage energy better. Over the past three years, Landis+Gyr has partnered with Oncor to deploy nearly two million smart meters, one of the largest and most successful roll outs in the U.S.”

More than 150 industry executives gathered at the White House today to address the challenges standing in the way of electric grid modernization.

“Landis+Gyr recognizes there remains plenty of work to be done to create a smart grid that is worthy of the 21st century,” said Figuilli. “The Biggest Energy Saver Campaign, by using proven technology to drive innovation and engagement, is aimed at helping speed up the process.”
