Zafar Alam , a graduate in mechanical engineering, established a lock manufacturing unit in 1970, at Aligarh a city in (U.P.) known for locks. He was serving as a lecturer in Aligarh Muslim University Polytechnic upto 1969. He gave up the teaching job & started manufacturing locks with limited capital & manpower.
India was a developing nation that time and he foresaw the future security needs of the country and started working on high security devices. He inspired professionals of the field & they all gathered around him to translate his dreams of upgrading lock technology into a reality.
He went around the world to study lock technology & was very much inspired by western standard of quality & technology. Thereafter he started R & D deptt. in his factory with young engineers. This team of highly motivated & dedicated engineers developed new designs of special purpose machines giving higher production with better accuracy.
Today this team has indigenously developed a full plant for manufacturing pin cylinder locks, matching international standards. Today Link Locks is manufacturing a variety of locks with a vast range of cycle locks, pad locks, door locks, both in lever & pin cylinder mechanism, and have entered into brass forging of mortise locks handles & plates.
To maintain the quality of decorative finish, Link Locks has developed in-house facilities for Nickel plating, Silver plating, Gold plating, Powder coating and Electrophoretic lacquering etc.
To achieve highest standard of accuracy the unit has CNC wire cut EDM machines, millings, lathes, surface & cylindrical grinders, shapers to name a few. It will not be out of place to mention here that India is an advanced Country so far as lock technology is concerned. Link Locks is the second largest lock manufacturer in the Country and is a house hold name.

Locking Principles
To restrict excess to a place, methods were devised which intern developed into the manufacturing of locks. There are two mechanical principles by which security in key operated locks is obtained.
One is by means of fixed obstructions to prevent wrong keys from entering or turning in the locks. The other implies moveable detainers (levers/pins) which must be arranged in pre-selected positions by the key before the bolt is moved. There are two types of mechanism to achieve the above two principles:
i) Lever Mechanism ii) Pin Cylinder Mechanism
The key is inserted in the key slot and then rotated to shift the bolt in a 'locking or unlocking' position while rotating the key some detainers (levers/pins) are provided in pre-arranged position to restrict the movement of the key, if it is not designed to function in that particular lock. These levers/pins, with specific thickness and profile are pressed down with the help of springs. The key is provided with specific slots on its blank face so that it can rotate in the lock with that specific combination of levers/pins, to operate locking bolt.
Quality of locks (Lever Mechanism)
The quality of locks depends on the selection of material of different part to withstand environmental conditions, mechanical properties and precision to achieve the required result for a longer time.
The next important thing is that it should be theft proof, to elaborate a little bit on the mechanism, for a user, it is worthwhile to explain that:
While 'locking' or 'unlocking' the spider shifts and spider needle passes through the gate of lever. The clearance between the gate and the needle decides the quality of lock. If it is more the quality of lock is considered bad. Since this can allow the lock to operate with another key. When the clearance is precised lock can be operated only with its own key. Link has the privilege of providing optimum clearance to achieve this quality. (yeh sirf apni hi chabi se khulte hain).
The thickness of levers should be precised.
The surface should be smooth.
The profile for key slot should be very accurate and smooth to match the slot on the key.
The material of the lever should be rustproof and wear resistant.
The pin on which these levers are pivoted should be concentric with the ends on which it is riveted to the lock machine.
The spring provided on individual lever should be of high quality to ensure long working life.
While manufacturing Link Locks we fulfill the above conditions.
The levers are made of high quality Brass.
Their profile is ensured as they are made with the help of a compound die.
The die is developed under the most advanced technology of CNC Wirecut EDM machine.
The levers are pivoted on a pin, which is made on a Traub machine to ensure concentricity with the riveted points.
The shackle is made of specific alloy steel so that it could be case carborised, hardened and tempered to ensure toughness against cutting and breaking etc.
While taking care of precision for high quality it is obvious that the cost will increase. This is the reason that other similar lock sometimes seems cheaper than Link Locks.
Electrophoretic Lacquering
Electrophoretic Lacquering or Clear Cladding is a general cathodic electrophoretic system, which offers an attractive combination of properties over a variety of metals. While making handle plates of a mortise lock one has to see that:
It should be decorative to ensure that it fits into the interior decor of the house.
It should also have sufficient life span so that it should not change its colour & shine due to environmental conditions.
It should also be able to withstand the abrasion due to usage like hand rubbing, wet handling, corrosive atmosphere, etc.
Electrophoretic coating process is developed to ensure that the decorative handle plates processed having Gold plating, Silver plating, Anthracite Nickel or two tone effect should be protected by clear lacquer coating.
In this process of clear cladding Polyurethane resin is dissolved into a tank and it is deposited on the surface of the handle and plate by electrolysis process forming a uniform clear film on the handle plate. After this it is heated in the oven at a certain temperature to ensure its toughness for longer life. Thus,the decorative coating provided is protected against environmental conditions and usage.
