MULTI-PURPOSE OPTICAL SENSOR (MPOS)

The word ‘multi-purpose’ in the name itself signifies that Multi-Purpose Optical Sensors can be used for a number of purposes such as line sensing, obstacle sensing and light sensing. As a result, it is possible to build various robots for different applications using these sensors.

 

 

 

CONSTRUCTION:

                The sensors are very simple to understand and easy to implement. The major components of these sensors include a High glow Red LED and a Photodiode. The LED emits light when energized; hence acting like an optical transmitter. Whereas the photodiode is capable of detecting light incident on it, thereby acting like an optical receiver. Thus, these sensors work on the principle of light sensing.

 

WORKING:

 The LED emits high intensity red light when current flows through it. If the emitted light of LED falls on any bright surface it is reflected back to the photo diode. Photo diode is a device which is able to detect the light intensity and convert it to a corresponding electric current. Other devices present in the board read the electric current generated from the photodiode and convert it to a logic voltage level which is either logic-0 or logic-1. Thus, depending on the presence or absence of the surface, logic data is developed by the light sensor

Ir Based Obstacle Sensor

The sensor is based on the principle of Infrared Reflection. It makes use of Infrared rays

modulated at 38 kHz and then receiving the reflected rays. The circuit is built around the

popular NE555 timer ic operating in Astable Multivibrator mode.

A continuous beam of IR rays modulated at 38k Hz is emitted by the IR LED connected to

the O/P pin of the 555 (pin-3). The receiver used is TSOP1738 from Vishay; it has a built-in

filter and gain-amplifier.

When there’s an Obstacle in front of the module, the IR rays are reflected back and fall on

the receiver (TSOP1738), making its output LOW, which is otherwise HIGH.

The LED indicator should not be confused with Active High o/p. The LED is connected

across the +Vcc and Data pin of TSOP with a 1K resistor in series.

Quick Reference:

Obstacle = LED Glow = Output is 0.0 - 0.2V No Obstacle = LED Off = Output is 5.0 - 5.2 V

    and the time of high level continuing is the time of that from the ultrasonic transmitting to 
    receiving.

The L3G4200D is a 3 axis gyroscope, providing you with very high resolution (16 bit)
measurements at up to 2000 degrees per second (dps).

 

The gyroscope measures how much the device is rotating around all three axis, the
range is user selectable and so can be adjusted to suit your application. The gyro is
marketed as ultra-stable, which basically means its measurements vary much less
over time and temperature compared to other gyroscopes you may have used in the
past.

 

The triple axis gyro outputs data over either I2C or SPI. If you choose to use the device
in I2C, there are handy soldering jumpers available on the board to choose the address.

The device also features a 32 count first in first out (FIFO) buffer, allowing you to request
the data in batches, rather than having to constantly query the device. This frees up
processor cycles for more calculations, whilst still maintaining a high bandwidth.
