| PREPARATION The fractured limb is prepared for applying plaster cast by covering the skin with soft roll / tubular gauze and / or stockinette to protect the hairs and to accommodate for a little bit of swelling. lt also protects the bone prominences, if any. How to use Take out the required no. of bandages from their pouches and keep them ready for use. See that core/plastic mandrel inside the roll is properly placed. Otherwise, gripping the bandage will become very difficult. Do not keep these bandages in a damp or wet place. Do not immerse all the bandages, at a time, in water. Immerse them one by one. Otherwise, there will be chances of "Presetting" in bandages. Take a small vessel of water filled with fresh, tepid water so as to allow complete immersion of bandage. Immerse the bandage completely in water and wait until all the air bubbles stop coming out of it Otherwise, dry patches will be found in the bandage where water could not reach. Take out the wet bandage from water and squeeze it gently to remove surplus water While squeezing the bandage, care must be taken to see that significant loss of plaster of pans does not occur. Apply the bandage evenly on to the affected area of limb. The wet plaster bandages are applied distally and proceed proximally so as to diminish venous congestion. A 50% overlap of width gives a double layer of plaster bandage, whereas, a 60% overlap gives a triple layer. A small overlap of padding should protrude beyond the margins of the wet plaster cast at both the ends The gauze and padding should be turned back at the distal free edge and at the proximal free edge. Care should be taken to make smooth edges by working them properly with a touch of the plaster paste. Use the required no of bandages to make a complete cast. Work the entire cast surface with a damp cotton or wet fingers to give a smooth finish. Normally, MEDICAST remains workable for 2-3 minutes and hence the desired moulding should be completed before this time If pressure is applied after the cast begins to set, there are chances of cracks development in the cast.
