Agarose is a purified form of agar agar. Agar agar is composed of about 70% agarose and 30% of agaropectin, which has sulphate group in its molecule. Reduction of agaropectin in agar agar improves physical properties of agar agar like gel strength, gelling temperature, electro endosmosis etc. Agarose is prepared by separating charged agaropectin from agar agar by various methods. It is mainly used for electrophoresis, DNA separation etc. Marine chemicals have recently launched agarose.
