The equipment is a soil displacement hammer, which is designed to install pipes and cables over distances of up to 50 m (150 ft) and pipe sizes of up to 200 mm (8”) without the need for open trenches. Also referred as “moles”, these hammers can be classified into groups. These hammers or ”moles” as they are referred to can be classified in two groups.

I. Design: The head and the body of the hammer are designed as two separate items.

II. Operating mode: Two stroke action

• On the first stroke the piston impacts on the rear of the chisel head assembly that brakes the possible obstacles in the bore path
• On the second action, the pipe and the body of the hammer follow into the bore

III. Effect: In the case, an obstacle is encountered, the GRUNDOMAT casing is kept from moving forward but the spring tensioned moving chisel head continues to function independently till the time, the obstacle is fractured and displaced. On the 1st impact, the ground resistance at the chisel head is overcome, while the 2nd action overtakes the friction onto the machine casing and/or pipe being towed.

IV. Summary: Due to the combination impact energy of the 2-stroke action, the equipment continues to fracture and displace along its pre-determined bore path.

V. Result: Successful bores Direct on Target

Fixed-head design:

I. Design: Such a hammer with the body and head being designed as one part, has to move forward in one step.

II.Effect: In the case, obstacles came across, the recoil causes oscillations along the entire casing of the machine, which creates an elliptical bore. This type of hammer may then veer off the bore course adopting the route of least resistance.

Pneumatic ramming machines have found uses for the dynamic propulsion of ramming method.

Using the ramming machines from TRACTO-TECHNIK, you can lay open steel pipes, either as product or protection pipes, with diameters up to 2 mm and for lengths of up to 80 m in the soil classifications 1 - 5 (partially even in classification 6 - easily removable rock) underneath highways, railway tracks and rivers. Pipe propulsion can also be used in vertical direction, e.g. while placing foundations. Using special adapters, the ramming machines have also found usage for ramming sheet piles. These can also be used for the renewal of damaged pipe lines.

The tight fitting connection between the machine and pipe is accomplished with conical plug-on tapers and / or multi-part impact segments. The superior soil removal adapters/ tapers have two holes for ejecting part of the soil carried along, thus causing relief. The different technical, operational and economical benefits, in comparison with other propulsion methods, result from the fact, that :

• The working pits require comparably small working depths and widths (little cover required)
• Instead of loosening the structure of soil in the propulsion path, it is smoothly packed to enclose the thrust pipe protectively and securely. It also makes pipe propulsion in water-bearing and rocky soils possible
