About UsMeppayil, the samurai country of Kerala, is once again in the news. This time it is not the great Kalari warriors like Thacholi Othena Kurup, Unniyarcha, Aromal Chekavar or their like who are bringing fame to this otherwise nondescript village. It has been a silent revolution which no other village could dream of. Until a few years back, Meppayil and adjoining villages likeNadapuram were basking in the glory of the great Chekavas, whose illustrious lives have been made famous by the Panans in their songs. However, a group of people put their heads together to create a different history. Today Meppayil is not known for Kalari alone but also for the genuine hand woven clothes.
A group of people in Meppayil established Meppayil Weavers' Co-Operative Society (MEPTEX) in the year 1959. The industry became fully functional in 1960. Making of genuine hand woven clothes with out even the slightest involvement of automation is being strictly followed by special vat dyes, thereby ensuring high quality clothes in attractive colors. Strict quality monitoring system ensures high quality products which starts right from procurement of yarn bleaching dyeing, winding, warping and weaving etc. This is achieved with the sincere and dedicated support of around 100 skilled employees of MEPTEX family. |
