"Metro Alloys Private Limited" (MAPL) is one of the largest concrete reinforcing Steel Bar producer in the Western region of India. The company is granted to use pioneer THERMEX rapid water quenching and tempering technology and trademark for manufacture of MA THERMEX QST Bars used for RCC in buildings & civil construction. Our journey in the steel industry began in 1964, when we started our 1st manufacturing unit at Wagle Industrial Estate, Thane, with a mere production of 1200 MT. per annum. After running this plant successfully we moved at Dombivali, in order to achieve mass production and strive for a bigger growth opportunity.

Since demand for our product was robust, in 1996, we shifted to our existing base i.e . Murbad. Due to regular plant modernization and gaining experience, the existing plant is a fully automatic rolling mill with a production capacity of 48000 M.T. P.A.

The company has also received 2 National Awards for the year 1992 – 93 from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. Of India, for the lowest specific fuel oil consumption and for best improvement in the steel re-rolling industry.

Bar Quenching and Self Tempering Process (QST).

In bar quenching process, the finished hot ribbed bar from the last stand of our rolling mill passes through high performance Thermex® quenching line where it is rapidly and uniformly cooled all around the surface of the bar. This sudden cooling lowers the surface temperature of re-bars forming a hard martensitic layer while internal core is still red hot. As the bar leaves cooling system on further cooling of the bar in atmosphere, a thermal exchange occurs between the core and cooled outside martensite surface whereby the resultant bar structure is a distinct tempered martensite at periphery and a fine grained ferrite pearlite structure in the central zone. Combination of these micro structures ensures the quenched re-bars improved yield strength greater than 400 N/mm2 to 500 M/mm2 with higher elongation and superior ductility and weldability required in construction industry. Air cooling from lower temperatures result in a thin and compact mill scale on the re-bars surface.

• Savings in steel consumption using M. A. Thermex 500 Grade steel in limit state designs yield stress is an important factor.
• 415 = 0.83 [indicating 17% saving however due to requirement of minimum steel provision and 500 development length at least 10% will be definitely saved]
• For bond requisite development length will have to be provided depending upon the quality of concrete used in structures.

Project site Engineers identifies good QST re-bar by a simple field test. The cross section of TMT bar sample is smoothened to a fine state by grinder and polish paper. Civil industry experts stress on the use of high strength weldable reinforcement steel of grade 500 with adequate ductility in RCC for achieving considerable economy and safety of structure which are designed to yield but not fail during an earthquake. The objective of guaranteed minimum 500N/mm2 yield strength with higher percentage elongation (16 to 28%) is easily met through advanced Thermex® quenching & self tempering technology globally accepted by civil engineers. The elongation values (ideal 16 to 28%) will enable distinguishing good and bad TMT bars depending upon final yield stress. In Thermex process, the re-bar metallurgical properties are attained by regulating the microstructure thus enabling the use of lower carbon content giving re-bar superior ductility and better weldability. The quality of Thermex re-bars is further enhanced due to low temperature rolling by way of higher strength. The use of MA Thermex quenched steel bars (TMT) in reinforced concrete structures will enhance their life expectancy, thus making it an investment for generations.
