MISL is located on about 593 acres area in Orissa, the steel belt of India. MISL presently has two, 389 cubic meters blast furnaces with all ore burden and produces about 1200 tonnes of hot metal per day. The ultimate hot metal production capacity of the existing blast furnaces has been estimated by MISL to be around 700,000 tonnes per year, with upto 70 per cent sinter in the burden and balance sized ore.
MISL now proposes to undertake expansion of the plant into an integrated steel plant of 3.5 MT annual capacity, in two distinct phases. In Phase 1, existing hot metal production will be utilized for conversion into continuously cast billets. In Phase 2, balance capacity creation will be targeted. The saleable products will be cast slab, cast billet and long products.
In Phase 1, one new steel melt shop (SMS-1) has been envisaged with AC EAF, utilizing available hot metal from the operating blast furnaces. The facilities envisaged are: - One, 120 ton AC EAF with 85 MVA transformer - One, 120 ton ladle refining furnace - One, 6-strand billet caster
In Phase 2, another new steel melt shop (SMS-2) will be set up. The facilities envisaged are: - Three, 120 cum BOFs - Two, ladle refining furnaces - Two, 6-strand billet casters - One, single strand slab caster
