Aluminium Alloy

Aluminium Alloy

Choosing the correct aluminium alloy is determined by how the aluminium will be utilised, how severely it will be formed and what the aluminium welding cosmetic requirements are. Then you can quickly match your application needs with the properties of the standard aluminium alloys. Below you will find useful descriptions of what each of the aluminium alloys can do, or call our specialised local team on 01698 841199.

Aluminium Extrusion

Aluminium Extrusion

Multi Metals are one of the most prolific purchasers of aluminium extrusion in the UK. This gives us enormous sourcing knowledge and purchasing power within the marketplace. Multi Metals have access to the widest possible range of alloys, shapes and sizes. In- depth knowledge of particular specialities means our customers are assured that their extrusions will be sourced from the most cost-effective source. Our range includes special alloys, with shapes and sizes for many industries including transport, marine, railways, medical, aerospace, leisure and sporting goods and engineering. We work closely with our customers to understand their business. This allows us to source the best product for all our customers. In addition to in-house assemblies, we provide full kits for major customer assemblies. Many customers have found major benefits in sourcing from Multi Metals rather than direct from the mill. These benefits include lower costs, saving time, flexibility, the possibility to make regular changes in scheduled quantities, keeping up to date with technology changes, help with design and technical issues, all without sacrificing quality or choice.

Aluminium Plate

Aluminium Plate

Multi metals ltd. Can supply aluminium plate in an extensive range of sizes, alloys and tempers including: from 6mm thick to 220m thick, both metric and imperial sizes offered in standard alloys stocked including 2014, 5083, 6061, and 6082. A range of tooling plates in 5000 and 7000 series. Multi metals has a comprehensive range of aluminium processing and cutting capabilities in order to provide you with the size you need. Many of our customers prefer us to carry out their first stage processing for them, allowing them to focus on their area of expertise in more skilled aluminium machining.

Aluminium Sheet

Aluminium Sheet

We have a comprehensive range of aluminium sheet alloys available at multi metals, to cater for all your aluminium requirements. Multi metals can offer you aluminium sheet from stock in a wide range of sizes, alloys and tempers. From aluminium sheet as small as 50mm x 30mm in size, up to and including 4m x 2m in size or from less than 0. 5mm thick to 6mm thick. We also provide standard aluminium sheet alloys, including 1050, 3003, 3103, 5083, 5251, 5754 and 6082. In addition to this we offer specialist aluminium sheet alloys as well as a range of patterned aluminium sheet and treadplate.

Aluminium Tooling Plate

Aluminium Tooling Plate
  • cast – a continuous cast aluminium plate machined on both sides to about 25 microinch finish and thermally stress relieved. This has the best thickness tolerance of any aluminium plate and maximum stability. Perfect for precision applications such as electronic base or mounting plates, photo vacuum plates, checking fixtures. Has good welding, anodising and corrosion resistance properties. No forming. Typically used in the 6 mm to 30 mm thickness range, but also available up to 150 mm.

  • rolled – aluminium alloy plate, usually in a 5000 series alloy, which has been rolled in the normal way. The aluminium plate is then super annealed to provide stability, after which it is precision face machined to provide close tolerance dimensions. This process is often carried out by processors as well as producing mills, and has a variety of trade or brand names that are often similar or equivalent to each other. This has some advantages over cast plate aluminium in welding or anodising, but may be less stable.

Heat Treatable Aluminium Alloys

Heat Treatable Aluminium Alloys

  • 2014/2024 – high strength aluminium alloys with excellent machinability; widely used in aircraft. Both have limited formability and only satisfactory corrosion resistance in the heat treated condition. Not recommended for fusion welding. Used for high strength parts in aircraft and machinery, including gears and bolts and for security vans where strength is critical.

  • 6082/6061 – widely used structural alloys for light to medium strength applications. Combine good formability, weldability, corrosion resistance and strength after heat treatment. Since they lose appreciable strength when welded, the 5000 series alloys replace them in some marine applications. Availability of bars, shapes, tubing and pipe in the same alloy helps make this a popular selection. 6082 is the most common heat treated plate from stock. 6061 is more commonly used in the usa.

  • 7020 – a good machining quality alloy mainly used in europe in place of 6082.

  • 7075 – a very high strength aircraft alloy. Good machinability and hardness. Not suitable for welding or corrosion resistance.

Non Heat Treatable Aluminium Alloys

  • 1050/1080/1200 – This is commercially pure aluminium, highly resistant to chemical attack and weathering. It is malleable, but also the weakest aluminium. It is excellent for chemical processing equipment and other uses where product purity is paramount, and also for metal pressings of all types, where ductility is critical.

  • 1350 – The electrical quality alloy is not usually found in the rolled form, normally rolled to particular requirements.

  • 3003/3103 – This is stronger than 1200 with the same quality of formability. It has excellent corrosion resistance and weldability. Typically used for storage tanks, chemical equipment, brazing applications, van bodies and cryogenic uses. For higher strength, 5251 or 5052 are perfect.

  • 5005 – Specified for anodised applications to match with 6063 extrusions. Anodised coating is clearer and lighter than 3003/3103 in severe drawing applications. It is used in decorative, architectural and consumer products.

  • 5052/5251/5754 – Forms easily in the intermediate tempers. Has very good corrosion resistance and weldability. Better salt water corrosion resistance than 1200. Typically used for pressure vessels, tanks, fittings or applications involving forming or welding. Where strength

  • 5083 – Stronger than either of the above aluminium alloys. For high strength welded applications with outstanding joint strength such as rail wagons, marine components, bridges, stationary cryogenic vessels and overhead cranes. Excellent weldability and corrosion resistance. Static welded strength is second only to 5754 and 5083 is superior to 5754 in energy absorption. Restricted to temperatures below 150ºF = 65.5ºC. The widest range of plate from stock.

  • 5086 – Excellent for welded structures – ship hulls and superstructures, road tankers, pressure vessels, movable and stationary cryogenic vessels and structures requiring a high rate of energy absorption. Restricted to temperatures below 150º F = 65.5ºC. More commonly used in the USA.

  • 5154 – Similar to 5083 which has largely superseded it. Mainly used by the MOD and naval applications.

  • 5454 – Suitable for all types of welded structures. ASME Code approved for temperatures up to 400º F = 204.4ºC. It can be utilised for hot asphalt road tankers, dump bodies, pressure vessels and marine structures.
