Testing Procedure & FAQ

UN CODE TESTING PROCEDURE AND FAQ ( FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION)

A. INTRODUCTION
The suitability of a drum for international transport is mentioned in the UN recommendation and is determined by subjecting the filled packaging to certain performance tests. In case of plastic drums these tests are :

1. Drop Test (The Height of drop test is determined by the packaging groups and specific gravity ( Density of product to be packed)

2. Stack Test for 28 days

3. Air & Hydraulic leak tests for liquids carrying drums
The testing of drums is conducted by approved test authority in India. The certificates in India are issued by the Indian Institute of Packaging.   (Authorised by Director General of Shipping Government of India).

B. UN CODE MARKING INTERPRETATION
Once a packaging has fulfilled the requirements set out in the performance tests, the UN recommendations then set out a procedure for marking the packaging in an appropriate manner. The certified packaging is first to be marked with the UN symbol. This is followed by a sample code for Identifying the type of packaging, e.g. for plastics drums :

1H1 NON REMOVABLE HEAD
1H2 REMOVABLE HEAD.
3H1 JERRYCAN, NON REMOVABLE HEAD.
3H2 JERRY CAN, REMOVABLE HEAD

This in turn is followed by a letter X, Y, or Z, which identifies the packaging group to which the drum has been tested depending upon whether the drum was tested for solids or liquids, the code will contain an "S" preceded by the gross weight of the package tested in Kg. or followed by a number specifying the hydraulic test pressure in KPA. Underneath this code is the certificate number preceded by letters identifying the country in which the drum was certified.

C. Validity :-

NORMAL VALIDITY OF CERTIFICATION IS FOR 3 MONTHS

1. Validity given is for production of the packages. The Packages produced during the validity period can be supplied in additional period of 10 days after expiry of the certificate.

2. Against certificate, manufacturers/dealers can supply maximum 2500 packages. If the requirement of exporters is more than 2500 packages it is necessary to take a quality checking report by the manufacturers/dealers of the packages by submitting 5 certificates.

3. The manufacturers / Dealers of the packages should not supply the packages after 100 days period from date of issue of certificate.

4. The packages produced by the manufacturers/exporters within 100 days can be used for 3 months after expiry of the certificate.

5. It is necessary to check the authenticity of the packages by conducting trails as per IMDG-CODE, ANNEX - I if packages are left over after 6 months from the date of issue of certificates. Once the satisfactory performance is obtained, then the exporter/s can utilise the balance quantity of the packages for next three months (i. e Total 9 months period from date of issue of certificate).

Comparison With HMW/HDPE Carboys With Ms Barrels

HMW-HDPE DRUM PACKAGING – THE MODERN ALTERNATIVE

Rigid packaging of bulk materials had undergone a sea change over the past several years. The norm has traditionally been packaging in MS Drums for liquids, and in open mouth steel drums for powders, lumps, other solid forms and viscous liquids. With the rapid development in polymer science over the past decade however combined with growing consumer awareness and improved raw material availability a move towards better packaging has been triggered off and has gained rapid momentum, HMW-HDPE carboys and Jerrycans have proven themselves the logical alternative.

High Density Polyethylene, known commonly as HMW-HDPE, particularly in its High Molecular Weight form has become the wonder plastic polymer of the packaging industry over the past decade. Extruded as a tape it is woven into extremely durable woven sacks. Blown into film it is then fashioned into bags for various applications. Blow moulded into containers it becomes possible to fashion packaging with virtually no restriction on shape or size. HMW-HDPE can easily coloured, printed or processed. It is lightweight, durable, chemically inert, stable, with a high Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR) quotient and available in grades covering diverse applications and end uses. It is logical therefore that drums manufactured out of HMW-HDPE have gained universal acceptance internationally, and are increasing their market share rapidly in India as well.

A Table comparing HMW-HDPE Drums with MS Drums is given below
.

HMW-HDPE Drums

MS Drums

Considerable design flexibility. No Design Flexibility Cylindrical shapes Possible only.
Reusable Can be reused but at additional cost
Light Weight thereby saving in terms of Energy and Cost for transportation.
210 Ltr. Container: 9-9.8 Kgs.
100 Ltr. Container: 4.5-5.0 Kgs.
Heavy, more energy required to handle and increases transportation cost.
210 Ltr. Container: 18-22 Kgs.
100 Ltr. Conatiner: 9 Kgs.
Single Step Construction, resulting in smooth clean inner surfaces. Many manufacturing operations of which most are manual, which could lead to foreign matter remaining in the barrel
One Piece seamless construction. Therefore possibility of leakage minimized. No Need for Liners to Pack Low Viscous Liquids as drums are double layers i.e. Inside white without pigment and outide coloured. Welded Joints therefore increases possibility of leakage. Therefore liners are required to pack Viscous Liquids.
Inert to reaction with most chemicals. However a very few reactive chemicals cannot be packed in HMW-HDPE. Corrosive products require epoxy lined drums.
Flexibility and good impact resistance, Dents are temporary and drums regain normal shapes automatically. Dents are permanent which results in chipping of paint and inner epoxy coating resulting in corresion.

Synopsis Of Niranjan's Co-Extruded Double Layer Carboys & Jerrycans

Carboys & Jerrycans manufactured by us have been developed over a period of time after analysis of the drawbacks of drums currently on the market and considering specific requirements arising out of Indian market conditions. The drum developed therefore is a user friendly package, with optimal handling qualities suitable both for mechanised and manual operations. Details are as follows:

1) Nature of Material:
The material used in the manufacture of this product is prime virgin High Molecular Weight/High Density Polyethylene (HMW/HDPE) granules. The Carboys and Jerrycans are of Co-extruded Multi Layer (Double) Construction Uncoloured virgin HMW/HDPE granules are used for the inner layer and coloured or carbon black filled virgin HMW/HDPE granules are used for the outer layer. The carbon black filled outer layer ensures protection of packed material from UV radiation, while the uncoloured inner layer ensures purity of sensitive materials.z

2) Method of Manufacture:
These containers are blow moulded on fully automatic co-extrusion blow moulding machines with parison programming for wall thickness controls. The products confirm to the Indian Standards specification IS-6312 and the UN standards to obtain IMDG code for exports of hazardous products. The specified tests include;
(1) Drop Test : Height 1.2 metres
(2) Stack Test: : Upto 2 metres.
(3) Closure Leakage Test. :
(4) Hydrostatic Test. : @ 1.1 kgs / cm2.
(5) Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR) Test. :
(6) Compatibility Test :
In addition another recommended test is the Transition test to test the effect of Plastics with the packed product and its transition into the same. The same test are also prescribed for UN certification to obtain the IMDG code for packaging and transportation of hazardous materials. Prior to despatch, the finished products are tested for Drop, Stack and Closure Leakage tests.z

3) Cost of the Package:
The cost of the carboy is relatively high because of the high cost of basic polymers. As the carboys are REUSABLE they can be used over and over again thereby leading to a REDUCTION in packaging costs.z

4) Methods of filling, closing and opening:
These containers can be Hot filled on conventional manual filling lines, as well as on automated equipment. A significant feature of our products is incorporation of Tamper proof & Sealable sealing rings on the closures, which have to be broken to gain access to the contents. These can be personalised with users logos and code numbers to further ensure tamper proofing. Few carboys and jerrycans are also designed with Pilfer Proof Caps to prevent theft and misuse. Closures are leak proof and tested at our works prior to despatch of finished products.

5) Nature of Transport system for which products are suitable:
Carboys & Jerrycans are extremely light weight and can be stacked after packing. They are designed for mechanised handling. Apart from normal fork-lift operations, recessed handle in the dome or side handles facilitates manual handling and lifting by cranes or pulley arrangements. Stiffening ribs have been incorporated in the drum for ruggedness under adverse conditions, which arise in transport.
