The NOV TDI tandem seal for inside sealing is a piston rod seal.
It can be used with mineral oils and in modified form with water base fluids, fire resistant fluids and compressed air.
The TDI seal consists of 2 parts, an external elastic ring of PUR with a sealing lip and an internal slide ring of abrasion resistant PTFE-Bronze compound with a sealing edge. Prior to Fitting, the sealing lip protrudes beyond the nominal diameter of the seal and when Fitted is pressed against the piston rod. Effective sealing is thereby provided at zero pressure.
The slide ring is surrounded by the elastic ring and seals axially in direct contact with the piston rod. Under increasing pressure and compression of the sealing ring, it is the slide ring which is predominantly pressed against the piston rod. The slide ring produces an annular cavity where any seepage oil that has passed the elastomers lip is collected. The seepage oil is held back by the sealing edge such that the emerging piston rod remains dry. During the return stroke, the collected oil is forced back into the cylinder.

The internal sealing surface of the seal primarily comprises the internal slide ring which possesses excellent sliding properties. There is no friction, no unacceptable heat generation, and above all no stick-slip effect.

Symmetrical Seals are seals whose cross section, when viewed from a cutaway, is symmetrical, i.e., the same on each side of the center line. These seals are for linear and reciprocating dynamic applications.
The symmetrical design allows for interchangeability between rod and piston applications. These type of seals became very popular because of their great advantages for reduced inventory and stock keeping purposes.
If, however, you require the best sealing results and durability, we recommend you select one of our rod or piston seals, depending on your application. These seals have very specific design features which deliver better results than Symmetrical Seals.
