Introduction to mini sugar plants
The mini sugar plants adopt the open pan sulphitation sugar manufacturing
process known as 'Khandsari'. This produces white crystalline sugar suitable
for direct consumption. The modern sulphitation Khandsari plants are
extremely efficient and produce sugar of quality like white sugar
manufactured in vacuum pan plants. The optimum capacity of such a plant
varies from 100 to 500 TCD (Tons of cane crushing per day).
Process
A brief explanation of the open pan sulphitation sugar manufacturing
process, comprises of the following procedures
- Cane transport by tractors and unloading near cane carriers after
weighing.
- Cane preparation by set of knives located on the cane carrier.
- Extraction of juice by cane crushing by roller milling in tandem.
- Clarification of juice by liming and sulphitataion, settling and
filtration.
- Heating, boiling and concentration of juice in multiple open
pans using improved bagasse furnaces.
- Boiling of 2 or 3 massecuites batch process for maximum recovery
of sugar.
- Crystallization in motion in crytallizers equipped with stirring
arrangements.
- Separation of sugars and molasses in power driven centrifugals.
- Hopper conveying and sugar drying using hot air.
- Sugar bagging in 50 Kg. bags.
- Molasses storage in tanks.

By-products
- Press mud- bio- fertlizer/ N-tricontanol
- Bagasse- excess bagasse can be used for co-generation of
electricity/bio-mass briquetting.
- Molasses- for alcohol (distillery), cattle feed, oxalic acid and
input to various other chemical industries.

By-products
Sugar cane is the principal raw material. Chemicals required are sulphur
rolls, powdered lime (limestone), deformers(castor oil), flocculent and
bacteriocide (disinfectant).
