ISO 22000 can be applied to organizations ranging from feed producers and primary producers through food manufacturers, transport and storage operators, and subcontractors to retail and food service outlets. Related organizations such as producers of equipment, packaging material, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients are also affected by the prospective standard.

ISO 9001:2008 specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization * needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and * aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. All requirements of ISO 9001:2008 are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations, regardless of type, size and product provided.

ISO/TS 16949:2009 has been written and adopted by the industry as the new international quality management system specification for automotive suppliers. It has been adopted to encourage improvement in both supply chain and the registration process. QS-9000, VDA6.1, EAQF, AVSQ and ISO/TS 16949:1999 are all quality management system specifications, currently used within the industry and are based on an old quality management system standard that has now been superseded. There are no plans to update QS-9000, VDA6.1, EAQF or AVSQ.   Vehicle manufacturers are either making ISO/TS 16949:2009 a mandatory requirement or encouraging their suppliers to upgrade to the new technical specification. Quality and reliability are critical values for the aerospace industry. In an environment where the mistakes or failure of products or services can be fatal, the effective operation of a quality management system plays an essential role in helping to reduce risks and provide a reliable framework for organizations to provide a product or service.

Quality management systems have been used in the aerospace industry for many years. Efforts by members of the aerospace industry to establish a single common Quality Management System resulted in the AS/EN 9100, 9110, 9120 series. They are used and supported by the world's leading aerospace companies and also throughout their supply chain partnerships.

The CE mark  (for conformite  Europeene) is a symbol applied to finished products and machinery which meets applicable European directives. The CE mark on a product indicates that the product as a whole conforms to the requirements of the applicable directive.   Occupational Health and Safety Management System provide a framework for managing OHS responsibilities. The framework is designed to allow companies to become more efficient and operate in a more integrated manner. Specifically, OHS management systems specify a process of achieving continuously improved OHS performance and complying with legislation.

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a process control system designed to identify and prevent microbial and other hazards in food production.  It includes steps designed to prevent problems before they occur and to correct deviations as soon as they are detected.  Such preventive control system with documentation and verification are widely recognized by scientific authorities and international organizations as the most effective approach available for producing safe food.

 

HACCP involves a system approach to identification of hazard, assessment of chances of occurrence of hazards during each phase, raw material procurement, manufacturing, distribution, usage of food products, and in defining the measures for hazard control.  In doing so, the many drawbacks prevalent in the inspection approach are provided and HACCP overcomes shortcomings of reliance only on microbial testing.

 

HACCP enables the producers, processors, distributors, exporters, etc, of food products to utilize technical resources efficiently and in a cost effective manner in assuring food safety.  Food inspection too would be more systematic and therefore hassle-free.  It would no doubt involve deployment of some additional finances initially but this would be more than compensated in the long run through consistently better quality and hence better prices and returns.

The concept of Laboratory Accreditation was developed to provide a means for third-party certification of the competence of laboratories to perform specific type(s) of testing and calibration.

Laboratory Accreditation provides formal recognition of competent laboratories, thus providing a ready means for customers to find reliable testing and calibration services in order to meet their demands.

Laboratory Accreditation enhances customer confidence in accepting testing / calibration reports issued by accredited laboratories.

The globalisation of Indian economy and the liberalisation policies initiated by the Government in reducing trade barriers and providing greater thrust to exports makes it imperative for Accredited Laboratories to be at international level of competence.
