A Retaining ring is a piece of hardware that holds on to a shaft in order to locate other items on the shaft, or to locate the shaft to a fixed item.
There are external retaining rings, which go on the outside of the shaft and internal retaining rings, which go on the inside of the shaft.

• Klip (also known as a poodle ring) - similar to an E-ring but with larger ears that provide a large surface area against the retained part

• Self-locking ring - does not require a groove

• Split ring (also known as an X-washer) - fits into external grooves and is closed with a pair of pliers

• Low clearance ring (also known as a crescent ring)
