The chemical offered features insolubility in water and solubility in hot inorganic acid. Having molecular formula CoO·Co2O3, it is used as a feed and fertilizer additive and a drying agent in inks and varnishes.

As cobalt carbonate decomposes to cobalt oxide at high temperature so it has same coloring application. The carbonate tends to disperse better than cobalt oxide in a glaze. Due to presence of CO2 gas at high temperature, it can produce blisters.
