It is a potent long acting histamine H2 receptor antagonist for the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcer. It inhibits basal and stimulated secretion of gastric acid, reducing both the volume and the acid and pepsin content of the secretion. Ranitidine has a relatively long duration of action and so a single 150 mg dose effectively suppresses gastric acid secretion for twelve hours.
Indications: Duodenal ulcer; benign gastric ulcer, reflux oesophagitis; postoperative gastric ulceration and other hyperacidity syndromes where reduction of acidity is beneficial.

It induces a so called dissociative anaesthesia-profound analgesia, immobility, amnesia with light sleep and feeling of dissociation from ones own body and the surroundings. The primary site of action is in the cortex & subcortial areas. Respiration is not depressed, reflaxes are not abolished and muscle tone increases. Heart rate, cardiac output and BP are elevated due to sympathetic stimulation. Children tolerate the drug better.
Indications: For operations on the head & neck, in patients who have bled, in those who do not want to lose consciousness & for short operations. Burn dressing. Anaesthetic for diagnostic & surgical procedures. To supplement low potency agents like mitrous oxide.
