For time immemorial, people of Indian origin have been using the neem tree, for variety of medicinal purposes. Earliest references to it are in the ancient sanskrit writings that are over 4,000 years old. The neem tree (azadirachta india) yields its seeds, twigs, leaves and bark to provide many benefits ranging from antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, dermatological, dental and other various organic uses. All these uses were based on the usage of the bark, twig, leaves or base neem Oil extracted through a time tested extraction process.
In the early 70's neem, known as cure-all for the human population, for its excellent therapeutic properties, was also being used as a natural "non-violent" pest control agent and in the vet care. It was its use in the Agriculture and pest control that caught the eye of the west, and was transformed from a highly effective, but low-end third-world product to a widely accepted "World Product" and an undisputed leader in the vast range of organic pesticides. The wonder product from the indian subcontinent had arrived.
It was in the early 80's that the neem was beginning to be researched on a larger scale than ever before. The first major break though was achieved in the us by Robert Larson of USDA in 1985 for the preparation of stabilized neem seed extract which was approved by EPA for use in US market. This process was acquired by another US based Company WR Grace in 1988.
