What Is Snap Action Thermal Cut Out? A Portex self-resetting thermal cut-out is a miniature, precision-built bimetallic device which senses temperature rise and whose internal contacts open with a snap action and interrupt current when its temperature reaches the preset trip temperature specified by the user. The contacts close with a snap action automatically and restore the current when the cut-out has cooled.
Definition of Thermal Cut-Outs -I.S. 302-1973, Para 2.37: A device which, during abnormal operation, limits the temperature of an appliance, or parts of it, by automatically opening the circuit or by reducing the current, and which is so constructed that its setting cannot be altered by the user.
Self-Resetting Thermal Cut-out
-I.S. 302-1973, Para 2.38: A thermal cut-out which automatically restores the current after the relevant part of the appliance has cooled down sufficiently.

Operating Features Operation: Cut-out is fitted at the location where temperature is to be sensed. When the surrounding temperature rises, the cut-out heats up and its internal mechanism operates at preset trip temperature thereby opening its contacts and interrupting the current supply. When the equipment cools, the cut-out resets automatically, thereby restoring the supply. Features: - Quick Break & Quick Make contact action (also called snap-action contact) ensures no sparking and long trouble free life.
- Trip Temperature specified by customer is factory pre-set. This calibration cannot be altered by the customer.
- Designed to withstand varnish impregnation and baking during fitting in motors, transformers, solenoids etc. Resistant to dust, heat, fumes, atmospheric pollution, varnish, moisture etc.
- Available with normally closed (N.C.) contacts which open on temperature rise or Normally Open (N.O.) contacts which close on temperature rise.
- Low cost.
- Long life and heavy current breaking capacity.
- Miniature size.
- High reliability because these are sealed non-tamperable devices.

Quality / Performance / Reliability / Endurance With over twenty five years of experience in the field of manufacturing thermal controls, and with numerous satisfied customers in all industries, our leadership in this technology is unchallenged. Continuous product upgrading is achieved by strenuous and sustained R&D and many patents.
All materials are of the highest grade. Before assembly all components are ultrasonically cleaned and inspected under microscope. Assemblies are spot welded with precision synchronous Spot Welders. There is no soldering at all. Stringent tests are carried out on 100% of the pieces at several stages of manufacturing. Our products are superior in all respects to imported cut-outs because we can afford to put in extra labour and painstaking effort inspecting and testing 100% of the pieces during production.
Finally pre-dispatch testing of trip temperature is done twice on 100% of the cut-outs. Whichever PORTEX control is selected for your application, you will get dependable operation, the result of perfect engineering, controlled manufacturing and thorough testing. We recognize the importance of dependable service to help you become one of our esteemed customers.
Special Features Unlike imported cut-outs our devices have special features to provide quick restarting characteristics in applications like pumps & motors where the customer prefers minimum downtime to ensure maximum utilization of his equipment.
A commonaly available temp limiting switch is merely a bi-metallic strip inside a housing, while our cut-outs are snap-action thermostats with a beryllium copper switching blade and a separate bimetallic actuating assembly. This sophisticated design ensures stable trip temperature, long life, high reliability and superior current carrying capabilities.
Customer Assistance We have well equipped testing facilities and considerable experience in carrying out investigations to determine the most suitable model and specifications to meet your objectives. Accordingly, you may, without obligation or commitment send us your equipment, and we will determine the most suitable thermal cut-out fitted for your testing and evaluation.
