Water is known to have substantial quantity of scale forming constituents such as calcium & magnesium-bicarbonates, sulphates, magnesium hydroxide, silica, slime algae, corrosion products, and slit and sludge. The scale deposits on several parts of boilers, compressors, vacuum driers, solar heaters, heat exchangers, evaporators, generators, A.C. units and water cooling circuits. This scale mostly deposits on metal parts and inside pipe lines.

The scales in exchanger, compressor and generators reduce its efficiency and heat transfer capacity. Heat conduction capacity of hard water scale is only 3.8 percent of steel. The scale also increases the fuel consumption by 12 percent. Additionally, they work as insulation for heat transfer which results in energy loss and high pressure for the compressors. The scale formed also obstruct fluid flow, cause localization of corrosion attack, metal failure at hot spots and reduction in the capacity of heat transfer tubes of exchangers.
