Chlorinated paraffin is the chlorinated derivatives of paraffin; its chemical formula is CnH (2n-m12) Clm. The features of Chlorinated paraffin include thickness, non-inflammable, non-toxicity, good electrical insulation, and good compatibility with plasticizers. As one kind of good auxiliary agent, it is widely used as auxiliary plasticizers and fire-retarding agent of PVC, synthetic rubber, alkyd resin, or used as additive of lubricant, elastic sealant auxiliary, waterproof agent, anti corrosive agent, coating, paint, adhesive, ink, and leather greasing agent, etc.
Chlorinated paraffin are manufactured by the chlorination of n-paraffin, Heavy n-paraffin or paraffin wax, normally in a batch process.
Chlorinated paraffin is used widely as a secondary plasticizers in flexible PVC compounds notably cable, footwear, hosing, conveyor belting, coated fabric and profiles. In these applications it can be used to partially replace more expensive primary plasticizers. In compounds with flame-retardant requirements, Chlorinated paraffin is used to partially replace more expensive primary flame-retardants.
Chlorinated paraffin can be used in soft PVC resin products to lower the cost and improve mechanical strength and operational life. It also can improve the resistance to fire, electricity, water, chemicals, aging, heat and light.
An important benefit of Chlorinated paraffin is its ability to reduce the unit cost of flexible PVC compounds. Correct reformulation with Chlorinated paraffin produces PVC compounds with comparable physical properties: - softness or hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break and others, as well as heat aged retention of physical properties.
