Synthetic Polyelectrolytes are extensively used in treatment of water and waste water. Their use increase the efficiency of the treatment processes, reduce cost of chemicals required produce smaller quantity of compact sludge which can be drained / disposed easily. Synthetic Polyelectrolytes help in water clarification remove suspended and colloidal particles which may consists of clay and silt, color bodies, precipitated iron or manganese oxide, and bacteria and algae. However most water require charge neutralization, if negative charge be neutralized the term coagulant applies to cationic chemicals. Flocculation by polymer coagulants is brought via their molecular weight (M.W.) which is very high compared to inorganic chemicals.
