A purlin is a horizontal structure in a roof which supports the loads from the roof deck or sheathing. These are supported by the principal rafters and the building walls and are commonly demanded in pre-engineered metal building systems and some timber frame construction. For being used in metal building roof systems, these are constructed from cold-formed steel 'Z' sections which can be lapped and nested at the supports which create a continuous beam configuration between the bays.
