As far as institutions in Carnatic music go, there are none more conservative and authoritative than the Madras Music Academy. To perform at the 82-year-old academy’s annual music festival in December is every career musician’s dream. When Raj Narayan, a young engineer and accomplished flautist, was given an opportunity to present two of his musical inventions – a shruti box and a tala instrument – to the academy in 1979, it was his moment of truth. With less than three months to go for his big date with the academy, the engineer from Bangalore, who recently quit a senior position at HAL, started developing his first prototype of an electronic version of the tambura – a small portable device to replace the large drone instrument that provides the harmonic bedrock to every Carnatic concert. “After demonstrating my shruti box and the tala instrument, I told them that I had one more instrument,” he recalled. “I had worked day and night for three months and finished making the tambura only a week before. When I switched it on, there was first silence, and then everybody burst out clapping.” Sitting in the front row of the august gathering at the academy on that fateful day was Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna. The vocalist drove Raj home immediately after the presentation for a closer look at the gadget, before ordering one. Over the next two weeks, Raj set to work again, and with help from his wife, Radhika Narayan, handcrafted three electronic tamburas for his first customers – Balamuralikrishna, L Shankar and L Subramaniam. Soon after, when Balamuralikrishna appeared on stage without a tambura player, but instead, Raj’s box, the Carnatic world was astonished. “It was a very bold thing to do at the time,” said Radhika, who is a veena player. “In a traditional set up like Carnatic music, to not use a tambura was to risk all sorts of adverse comments from critics and listeners.” Radhika, an equal partner to Raj’s early experiments, even helped out with the soldering of electronic circuits. “It was all totally new to me. I am a post graduate in endocrinology, which has nothing to do with soldering or making printed circuit boards from scratch,” she said. “We, being first generation entrepreneurs, didn’t know whether there was any potential in what we were doing. In order to make the Printed Circuit Boards, if I took the artwork and went to a manufacturer, he would only take it up if it was a bulk order – 100 or 200 PCBs,” Raj explained. “At that point I used to wonder if I would ever be able to sell 100 electronic tamburas – in my entire life.
