This work of investigative journalism is an eye-opener for the opinion makers to assess the damaging factors save the nation’s secular soliloquies. It recounts the eyewitness of clandestine appearance of Ram’s idol inside Babri Masjid some seven decades ago.
Unpardonable act of Babri Masjid demolition on 06 December 1992 was a resultant bigotry which tarnished the country’s religious diversity. From investigative reports by the author(s) and first-hand narrations from individuals interviewed from those mattered in this case to eyewitness of surreptitious placing of idol inside the mosque, this book has ample details to engage readers to think in a context of evidences presented.
Muhammad Ismael, then Muezzin of now demolished Babri Masjid, was deeply slumbered upon hearing a thud sound rumbled from mosque’s medieval precincts. Like a powerful drum bang it was but forced entry of Ram inside a mosque. That dark night scared the muezzin – and the Indian Muslim community thereafter. The Muezzin had been observing the suspicious act with the course of events outside mosque for weeks. He foresaw an unpredictable misfortune.
The muezzin sensed from the incidence occurring in that dark night that something unusual was happening. He was prophesying another misfortune since many days by a look at dark clouds hovering over the mosque. It was severer than 1934 attack he witnessed which had damaged the mosque’s domes and a hole was created.

The Gracious Quran

This is a successful attempt to present the essence of the Qur’??n’s message in lucid English. However, the “interpretation” is a liberal translation which contains explanations of the holy verses of the Qur’??n. In this way, it has become a mixture of Allah’s words and the interpreter’s words. Sometimes one cannot distinguish between the two.
Nevertheless, the interpreter has done a marvellous job in purposely making it an interpretation rather than a translation in order to convey the message of the Divine Revelation without any linguistic “hiccups” and also to maintain the flow.
But the translation/interpretation should have made a little less usage of such “formal” English which seems to cater only to the needs of the “core” English speaking world (i.e. the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand) and seems to belittle the wider readership which includes South Asia, South East Asia and Africa.
It is notable that the interpreter hasn’t “deviated” from the traditional interpretation of the Qur’??nic text, including the texts related to the hudood punishments.
Comments On Some Specific Verses:
A) In Surah Al Baqarah verse 208, the learned interpreter has translated the word “Al Silm” (??????????) as “peace” while the whole context beginning from verse 205 clearly indicates that whoever follows the footsteps of Satan creates chaos and disorder as is mentioned in the above mentioned verse and whoever follows the Divine Guidance and the footsteps of Allah’s Messenger creates peace and stability in the world. That’s the reason they were demanded to enter the whole of the Islamic system of life and not merely a part of it which was done by the Jews. We therefore request our esteemed interpreter to review this specific word “peace”.
B) In verses 275-279 of Surah Al Baqarah, we observe that –
1) The interpreter has used the word “usury” instead of “interest” which amounts to limiting the interest based transactions to only the money lenders excluding thereby the institutionalised practice of interest which is the lifeline of current economic system. This system lends money to the governments and bails them out too. What a selling and purchasing!

Muslim Majlis E Mushawarat

The recently published Urdu book Muslim Majlis e Mushawarat – Ek Mukhtasar Tareekh is written by a young journalist Mohammad Alamullah. The author of this book hails from a modest suburb of Ranchi called Itki and has written many articles and stories on Indian Muslims. If the name of this book can be translated into English then it would probably be – Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat – A Brief History. The irony of Muslims in India is that they are always attached to past events for seeking the right course for future. Very less is written to draw the future course based on current events. But, as the author says in the Preface, his idea behind writing this book was to present the history of struggles and strategies of Muslim leaders in post-Independence India who wanted to change the social and political status of Muslims in our country.
Those who follow the developments of Muslims’ social and political activism should be very much aware of the fact that All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat has been, since its inception in 1964, a sincere platform for Muslim leaders and intelligentsia.
AIMMM, an apex body of Indian Muslim organisations, was established at a representative meeting of the community leaders at Lucknow on 8-9 August 1964. Dr Syed Mahmood was the first President and MN Anwar its first General Secretary.
The book highlights the massive devastation of Muslims in North India, especially unstoppable sequence of brutal riots after 1961 at Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Rourkela and the ongoing stigmatisation of Muslims as the background of the formation of AIMMM. Calcutta (now Kolkata) too had witnessed anti-Muslim riots in early 1964. These riots left the entire community broken and shattered. Peace loving and secular Hindus were also appalled at the worrisome happenings at that time and were seen in solidarity with the Muslim leaders.

Islam and Women Rights

The book Women in Islam: Exploring New Paradigms by Dr. Moin Qazi breaks misconceptions, myths and manoeuvres on the Islamic concept of women rights. A new addition to the literature on Islam religion and women’s rights, it confronts several misunderstandings. Perceptive response to the biased perceptions on Islam that often portray this faith erroneously instead of describing its ascent – a religion with the history of first being foremost advocator of women emancipation – it has ample insights.
Islam is usually denounced in the pretext of few common Muslims’ misbehaviour with the fairer to judge its women rights. Referring to the verses of the Holy Qur’??n and examples from Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) relation with his wives, this book is seminal for readers’ awareness of women rights and their social status in Islam. The verses describe women’s role for mankind’s sustainability.

The First Muslim

Islam is the fastest growing faith today. Countless people return to it after listening to their conscience for sustainable life here and hereafter. The followers must learn and unlearn its variegated perceptions. Facts about the life of the Prophet are often misconstrued in prejudice and platitude. What made him a highly admired person – husband, father, leader and last but not the least esteemed Prophet? Hazleton’s book is seminal vividness of narration. It is an engaging and expressive portrayal of the Prophet’s life.
Doubly orphaned childhood and leaving bigger impact on his tribesmen in early youth with inevitable honesty are notable facts mentioned about the Prophet’s personality. This book elaborates details like his marriages, journey to accept divine truth, solitary meditations and advocating for the socio-political transformations in the Arab culture fourteen centuries ago.
Islamic revolution in the lifetime of the Prophet is a subject to study even today. Through foolproof portrayal, this book mentions the Prophet’s forced exit from Makkah to Medina (then Yathrib) to other key incidences associated with his life. He was an infallible Prophet with a vision and a loving family man. Equally was he an adorable leader, Hazleton mentions descriptively. His introspective philosophical thoughts and the seal on prophet-hood are universally relevant for mankind.
Islam didn’t spread easily. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) and his early companions fought several wars and encountered too much pain and destruction. He was a highly calculative political strategist with thorough understanding of cultural identities of Arabs. His spiritual revolution brought social change in the Arabian Peninsula. This book details the contexts of his marriages to hurdles he faced until arriving at the holy site Ka’ba to perform Hajj years after his exile. Such richly detailed facts are delicate information in a refreshing tone.

The Story of Khadija

Earliest of the moral supports which Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) received was from his first wife Khadijah or Khad??ja bint Khuwaylid, also named Khad??ja al-Kubra or Khadija the Great (555/567–620 CE). As the Prophet’s first wife, she had status of “Mother of the Believers – Muslims” being first person accepting Islam.
Khad??ja al-Kubra devoted her life to Islam’s ideals as earliest of the followers of prophet-husband to accept the true faith. It is noticeable that she received Almighty Allah’s blessings and assurances for a place in heaven by the messenger angel Gabriel during an early revelation to the Prophet. The Story of Khadija: The First Muslim and the Wife of the Prophet Muhammad narrates her overwhelming contributions as Islam’s early preacher.
This book is useful for the scholars and laymen to know Islam’s early period in the context of her selfless devotion as the Prophet’s first wife. The Prophet’s dedicated companions and his first wife boosted the morale from in and around Makkah al-Mukarramah and al-Mad??nah al-Munawwarah cities to expansion throughout the world. This book cursorily mentions the undeniable sacrifices of early believers and their personalities which inspired the future generations.
Preaching Islamic ethics, this book engages readers from start to end. Meticulous explanation of Islam’s expansion over the periods, contribution of the Prophet’s followers, especially his adorable wife Khad??ja al-Kubra, their inspirational relationships, her sacrifices and devotion to propagate Islamic values to her loyalty to the Prophet are major themes of this book.

Halal Haram

As far as the importance of food in life is concerned, it is one of the basic requirements of humans and animals both, for life without food is impossible for any living being. But there is a huge difference between the human consumption of food and that of animals. Human beings follow certain rules, regulations and limitations in consuming food while animals don’t. That is why Islam also formulates rules, regulations and limitations for its believers. Subsequently, it draws a clear line of distinction between what is permissible (halal) and what is not permissible (haram). But the present market where foodstuff is sold and bought doesn’t maintain the rules, regulations and limitations laid by Islam. The book Halal Haram, a guide by Consumers Associations of Penang (CAP), tries to evaluate the food items available in market in the light of Islamic teachings.
It has been prepared as a guide by CAP; hence no author tagline. Since CAP is a Malaysian association, its content is also based on Malaysian market and practices. It has been written keeping in view the Malaysian consumers in particular. But as the issues and practices discussed in the book are of global concern, it is equally useful for Non-Malaysians too.
What are the things in your consuming items? How is it produced? The book tries to answer these questions. It is a good effort to make people aware about the food items provided by factories and companies to consumers. It goes into great depth of the production and manufacturing of food items. It sheds light on the aggregates and additives used in consuming items. It makes public certain haram and injurious things used in the preparation of some food and other items that remain hidden and unknown to the consumers and the consumers hardly pay attention to it.
