Zinc Engine Anodes
Engine heat exchangers have a common problem of corrosion due to the difference in metal between casing and tube stack. Employing zinc pencil anodes reduces the corrosion on the casing prolonging the life of both casing and tube stack whilst in sea water. Zinc is the only material that has an official specification, the American MIL-A-18001 K spec. Zinc is a well-proven anode material and its capacity is virtually unaffected by the operating current density, although the driving voltage diminishes with increasing temperature therefore it has limited application. If zinc is not to this specification i.e. high purity zinc 99.99%, it will have a limited use as an anode material because of iron present as an impurity.

Corrosion may be defined as the deterioration of a metal due to reaction with its environment. For corrosion to occur, areas with different electrical potentials must exist on the metal surface. An electrical current will flow between water and fittings made of different metals, causing some of them to corrode away. On wooden and GRP boats the propeller, shaft, p-bracket and skin fitting are at risk, while on a steel hulled vessel the whole underwater area is vulnerable to costly and potentially dangerous damage. Zinc hull anodes are used and designed to prevent corrosion of the entire immersed steel hull area including exposed shafts, brackets, rudders and propellers.

Zinc strip anodes are mounted on the hull of yacht and leisure vessels to protect the exposed steel prolonging their life. Due to the shape of the anode they minimize any drag that may slow down the vessel. The zinc strip can be manufactured with a non-reactive aluminium insert for the protection of aluminium-hulled vessels in seawater.
Zinc tank anodes are used to complement the coating at areas of exposed steel prolonging the life of coating and structure. Hydrogen is evolved from zinc anodes and termite sparking may occur when light alloys impact on rusty steel. Therefore there is a height restriction in cargo/ballast tanks in tankers that anodes are not located at a height (in m) greater than 27/W where W is the total mass (in kg) of the anode.
