The Indian farmers generally take various economic decisions regarding production, marketing and investment using locally gathered partial and fragmented information and following a largely intuitive process They do not have ready and timely access to information regarding various aspects of the market for the crop they are interested in and as a result many a time they take sub-optimal decisions leading to large losses on their investment. As regards the crop planning, a farmer requires advisory services related to the soil condition, weather, feasibility of crop diversification and water availability and requirements for different cropping patterns etc. In subsequent stages he needs information related to the types of seeds, fertilizers, machinery, marketing channels, storage facilities etc. At each stage of the lifecycle, the farmer is supported by various government agencies including banks, cooperatives, educational and research institutions. However, the farmers’ access to such information and advisory services is mediated through personal access and communications and not necessarily available on demand.
