Applications: Hydro-generators, Vertical motors, and vertical pumps. Fluid film bearings, used in power sector products, like hydro generators, vertical motors, vertical pumps, Boiler feed water pumps, condensate pumps etc., require the "bearing segments" to withstand "High unit pressures" and "high rotational speeds". They frequently fail, due to overloading and high temperature problems, leading to machinery breakdown. Through a novel method of effective heat transfer, directly from the heat generating surface, the temperature rise and operating temperature, of the bearing segments, are brought well under control, enabling the same pad segments, to withstand higher unit pressures, as well as higher peripheral velocities. The retrofitting exercise brings down the operating bearing pad temperatures, by a margin of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius.

other alternative designs of solar water heating devices, need additional investment and space for execution, and do not tend to use the already existing facilities, in and around the swimming pool. Why not we go in . as a retrofit, to already existing utility, around the swimming pool, and the design features of such a retrofit is enumerated below.In this proposal, we use the existing winding arrangement with drum, which is motorized, and any given direction reversal, that is needed. A uniform cover like clothing type, solar heat absorbing foil, made of pure copper sheet, will be formed to suit the existing surface of the swimming pool. This foil will be spread on the surface of water, and will be submerged underneath the surface, by say 1 to 2 mm. As the water surface is still, this arrangement will enable direct tapping of the solar energy for heating the water. Movement and spread of this heating cover will pose some problem. For that as we already have the drive arrangement, we need not bother. We may have to embed two 1 inch pipe as shown in the drawing. The two pipes will be located in the swimming pool on either side, as shown in the drawing. These pipes, help in holding the sheet underneath the surface of water, besides guiding the heating film back to the roller feed, when not required, say when we clean up the water periodically, once a month. The cover sheet besides heating the swimming pool water, will serve the purpose of preventing leaf dust and debris falling along with wind. That way it will be a double purpose cover. On the top surface, we can give a black color chrome coating to further boost the heat absorption. Even if by chance the existing roller arrangement by chance goes out of order, this sheet can simply be rolled in to a bundle, and kept aside.

paeabolic dish type is used for reflecting the incident solar heat rays to a central copper tube, the outside surface of which is painted in black chrome colur, to increase the solar sponging effect on to the surface of the copper tube. inside the tube, cold water is allowed to flow in the downward direction, heat absorption to the cold water is regukated by placing washers inside the tube one over the other. the washers are of smaller in size with adequate clearance for the same to slide down. cold water is forced to wash the outter surface of the tube, therby picking up the solar heat collected on the surface. the washers are retained in its place rthrough set screws from the copper tube outter surface.

 
 

Measurement Of Hydodynamic Oil Film Thockness

Depending upon the type, size and operating conditions of the unit, the hydrodynamic thrust Bearings, are suitably designed and located. ..The deciding operating parameter of the hydro dynamic bearing segments is the oil-film thickness separating the thrust runner surface and the bearing segments. The oil-film Thickness in Hydrodynamic thrust bearings for vertical applications during normal operation, vary from 10 to 85 microns .This film thickness drastically changes during the coast-up and coast-down periods of the machine when rotational speed changes. Above all the performance parameters, the creation and retention of the requisite oil film thickness in the bearing segments decide the successful operation of the machine. It is imperative we have a means to observe the initial tilt of the thrust bearing segment, and also measure its thickness.In the experimental setup, we could not only observe the initial tilt, but also measure the oil film thickness, using fiber optic system, with a closed circuit television monitor, for easy viewing with out straining the eyes.

 
 

Parabolic Dish Type Solar Water Heater For Swimming Pools

This consists of a parabolic dish type of solar energy collector, which reflects all the incident heat energy of sun, to the central heat absorbing tube, placed at the centre of the parabolic dish collector. The heat absorbed by the central copper tube is the transferred to the cold water of the swimming pool through a mushroom type of fins attached to the central pipe. This heat conducting fins, are located in the cold water, and is placed from the bottom of the solar water heater, through the use of four set screws, from the bottom of the dish collector as shown in the drawing. To increase the heat absorption, the outer surface of the central tube is painted in black chrome color. The floating solar water collector is located in the maximum depth area of the swimming pool as shown in the drawing. Same way, the inside surface of the parabolic dish is painted with heat rays reflecting color of white. Two motorized stirrers are placed in the maximum depth zone of the swimming pool to recirculate the heated water and to distribute the solar heat uniformly to the bulk water. The whole assembly is subjected by the gravitational forces in the downward direction, inward radial forces due to solar radiation on the parabolic disc upward thrust on the heat sponging elements submerged under the water surface, and so on. For small dish size, both the upward and downward forces are likely to balance resulting in a stable float of the assembly. But for larger size of parabolic dish, we may have to introduce an anti-submerging float in-between the dish collector and the heat sponging elements inside the water level, as shown in the drawing. Again this float size and thickness is dependent on the size of the dish. The floating disc/washer material can be light wood/thermo Cole or in inflated rubber tube of sufficient air pressure inside to keep the whole assembly floating overcoming the downward forces of gravity of the assembly.
