socio- economic research and development society (serds) ,a registered organization under the govt. Of india act 1860; took birth as a developmental agency ,when a group of educated women under the leadership of dr. (mrs) zeeshan amir started working on the problems of women in ?mirzapur?, famous for its carpet business.
keeping in view of the background of these individuals, a scheme to train and encourage the age ?old indian tradition of sewing ,embroidery, appliqu? work and patch work etc. Were visualized and promoted to create new and more pleasant and challenging work which at the same time would relate to the ever changing requirements of the market place.
serds initially selected the fabrication of patchwork quilts, bed covers, cushion covers and appliqu?d quilts etc. In all theses the quilting is done by hand. This art is an old tradition of indian folk art. The village people and poor families use torn clothes to form different layers of it and bind with beautiful quilting . They use it as mattresses or quilts. Serds tried to use this art , developed out of need to fabricate marketable items.
thus in order to help in marketing the products made by these women ;saheli boutique was established in 1993. Over a period of time a number of the women and girls have developed into excellent craft person who have helped to make saheli boutique an outstanding institution in its area of operation.
saheli boutique specializes in custom production of patchwork quilts and bed covers on order by creatively using the old silk sarees , shalwar suits , cotton dresses and cut pieces supplied by its customers.
further to the above, the production of new household linen ,dresses and linens especially for children is an ongoing process.
