Prismatic Compass.

Prismatic Compass.

This Prismatic Compass is a fully functional Prismatic Surveying Compass and yields reasonably accurate results.  It comes with an aluminum tripod and canvas cases.  The design of the Prismatic Compass allows the user to simultaneously view the object being sighted and its magnetic heading with approximately 1/2 degree resolution.  The compass case and lid is solid brass with a black powder coating.  The rear sight is machined aluminum. The prism can be flipped up for use as a front sight, and at the same time view the compass heading.  There are two colored filters that can be placed in the optical path of the measurement to reduce glare.  There is a small cover that can be swung into place to protect the prism.  The degree markings on the compass rose are stamped mirror image so the heading reads properly when viewed through the prism.  When taking a heading measurement, the magnetic heading appears clearly under the object being sighted.  Two adjustment screws allow the height of the prism to be precisely set for proper focus.  Pressing a small plunger button near the rear sight locks the compass card for easier reading.  The compass has a needle lift mechanism to protect the agate compass jeweled bearing when being transported.  The rear sight has a replaceable thread and a hinged mirror that can also be raised or lowered.  The compass can be threaded onto the lightweight surveyor's tripod with a ball and socket head using standard 3/4 inch x 24 threads.  The compass measures 4 3/8 inches (11.1 cm) in diameter, 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) thick, and weighs one pound, 3 ounces (539 grams).  When mounted on its tripod, the height of the compass is adjustable from a minimum height of 12 1/2 inches (31.7 cm) tall is a maximum height of 21 inches (53.3 cm) tall.  This compass is accurate with a resolution of about 1/2 a degree.  Both the compass and tripod come with canvas cases.

Brunton Compass

Brunton Compass

The history of the Brunton pocket transit starts in 1894 when the original design was patented by a Canadian geologist named D.W. Brunton as a rugged, simple instrument for basic field mapping in remote areas.  For over 75 years it was made with his name on the label  by the William Ainsworth Company in Denver, Colorado. The instrument nameplate read "D.W. Brunton's (trade mark reg. U.S. pat. off.) pocket transit".  Because of that long association of the name Brunton with the pocket transit,  most field geologists simply refer to the pocket transit as a "Brunton".  As time has passed and geology as a field profession has declined, we now find customers sometimes asking us for a "Bunton" compass, or a "Bruton" compass. It is available in three kinds regular of finish such as Brass Polish,Nickle Chrome & in Antique finish also there are different sizes of this very beautiful Compass but the general size is of 4" inch.

Sundial Compass with Rosewood Box.

This is a beautiful solid brass antique reproduction of a sundial with an internal magnetic compass.  The top of the sundial is hinged and a curved scale is used to set your local latitude angle.  The magnetic compass allows the sundial to be oriented North.  The compass features a needle lift mechanism to protect the compass's jeweled bearing when being transported.  There are three adjustable legs that are used to precisely level the sundial.  The sun's shadow cast by the sundial's vane marks the local time. The top of the sundial can lay down flat, and both the latitude scale and the sundial vane are hinged to lay flat for compact storage.  The sundial measures 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) tall, 2 inches (5.1 cm) tall when collapsed, the body of the compass is 2 7/8 inches (7.3 cm) in diameter, and the sundial weighs 14 ounces (397 grams).  The sundial compass is available in either a polished brass or an antique brass patina finish.  A beautiful hardwood case is included for display and storage of the brass sundial.
