Power For All By 2010  [14-MAR-10]

Author : Madhur Srivastava
Published in : Power Insight Magazine March - April '2010

Issue:- The Government of India has set a mission of “power for all by 2010”.

In order to achieve this, expansion of the regional transmission network and inter-regional capacity to transmit power would be essential. All over the world, power communities have realised that the capacity addition alone is not a solution to bridge the ever-widening gap between demand and supply. Reductions in energy demand and consumption by the end user can free up electricity generation, transmission and distribution capacity at a fraction of the cost required to provide new capacity.

A new report highlights the massive challenge the roll-out of smart metering will pose for countries throughout western Europe – arguing that, as a telecommunications project, it is on a par with the creation of the Internet. The report, by market analysts Data monitor, values the smart meter market across western Europe at between 15 and 26 billion and claims utility and telecoms industry processes in competitive markets such as the UK will need to be re-designed ahead of the roll-out.
