a scanning electron microscope can provide high magnification and give more detailed fibre surface information than an optical microscope. It observes fibre surface structure without any influence from fibre pigmentation or dyed colour. The siam test method (pdf 605 kb) provides species identification of animals by using maldi-tof mass spectrometry. Siam can determine the species even from traces of the hair, claws and nails of the animal. This method does not depend on dna or rna of the sample and it is able to identify those fibres that are morphologically damaged.
