We also buy the old planing machines in whatever condition they are available. We bring such planers to our works; scrape the sliding surfaces for a good blue-matching and replace the worm out rotating parts like bearings, lead screws, box nut etc. After assembly, geometrical alignment and testing to the test-chart parameters, we convert these machines into Plano millers by retrofitting our milling heads and feed system package.

 

Converted Plano millers, when retrofitted with ram type milling head & axis feed system, is the near-ultimate solution in linear machining at an amazingly affordable cost. Ram head adds Plano milling, drilling, boring, facing capabilities to a planing machine. In combination with DRO for axes movement, ram type milling head can help the converted Plano miller to perform coordinate machining capabilities like pitch drilling, boring etc accurately. Detachable right angle milling attachment permits ram to machine the side walls inside the deep, inaccessible interiors of a work piece. A small investment on a ram type milling head will bring home a whole lot of amazing and multipurpose linear machining capabilities to the planer, without the need of additional space and man power!

Cylindrical quills of the conventional milling heads inherently need more sliding clearance in their respective guiding bores in the spindle housings. Larger clearance between the quill and the bore reduces the rigidity of the milling head. As the cutting zone gets shifted away from the milling head, spindle accuracy keeps deteriorating. Large bearing supports for long spindle make the spindle housing huge, which prevented them from reaching the interiors of jobs, having narrow access passage. Sleek - yet rugged, long – yet accurate, Ram type milling head overcomes these barriers of the conventional milling head, without sacrificing the rigidity.

The box type ram of the milling head is located in a rigid housing. The square design of the ram minimizes the play between the male and female sliding surfaces. Unique, 4 numbers of hand scraped taper jibs eliminate excess clearance between the sliding surfaces and leave just minimum sliding clearance that is required. When machining is done at long-distance away from the spindle, the accuracy and material removal capabilities of the milling head remain unaffected.

Ram type milling heads are hitherto exclusive for high end machines like CNC Plano millers. Shenoy Engg Pvt Ltd, a Bangalore based SPM manufacturers, have made available the ram type milling heads at an affordable price even for the conventional planing machines, which are to be converted into Plano millers. The ram stroke or vertical traverse is 350 mm or more, if required. 145 mm x 145 mm box type ram is made of high grade CI, stress-relieved and hand-scraped for a very level of blue match. Internal row of multiple bearings provides rigid support to the long spindle of the ram type milling head. The ram feed is through a combination of common VFD controlled motor, gear box, angular contact bearing supported ball lead screw and box nut.  Adjustable feed-end setting is through dog operated limit switches and the scale with graduation. A 5 HP motor powers the ISO-40 spindle through a gear train. There are 4 spindle speeds through lever operated mechanism. The head is capable of accommodating Ø160 mm cutter maximum.

Floor Type, Duplex Plano Millers against an export order, is the most challenging Plano milling SPM that we created in terms of accuracy, configuration, capacity and size. The basic configuration of the machine is almost similar to a plate edge milling machine or a floor type Plano miller. There are 2 moving columns on either side of the T slot bed. Since there is no top bridge, unlike in a gantry Plano miller, each station can be used independent of the other. Each column accommodates a side mounting type 20 HP milling head. The 13.55 mtrs longitudinal traverse of the column on either side, on a 17 mtrs long base, is through a rack and pinion mechanism. An extremely rigid base is provided for the longitudinal traverse of the column. The cross traverse is 350 mm and the vertical traverse is 700 mm. The segmented structurals of the machine are made from the stress-relieved, high grade cast iron. All the male sliding surfaces are provided with case-hardened guideway strips and the female sliding surfaces are provided with turcite lining for wear-resistance, smooth movement and torsion-load resistance. Job clamping is through specially designed, hydraulically operated fixtures. The X axis traverse on both the sides is powered by GE Fanuc servo system for accurate pitch selection and for rapid positioning. The vertical and cross axes traverses are through VFD controlled AC motor and they are DRO enabled.

The machine is designed for heavy material removal, using max. Ø 600 mm cutter. The combination of servo enabled feed system and heavy spindle power of 20 HP permits accurate and heavy drilling and boring operations as well. By introducing tilting mechanism to the milling head, the same machine can be used for weld edge preparation of plates, like in edge milling machines. While the 20 HP side milling head facilitates side machining, the detachable right angle milling attachment adds general purpose, top and side face machining capabilities to the machine. In other words, the machine is designed for infinite capabilities in linear machining. Floor type Plano millers are ideal for conserving the precious shop floor space, when compared with the conventional Plano millers. By adding standardized base segments, it is possible to extend the stroke length, whenever required. 

We manufacture Special Purpose Plano Millers. A discarded planer in dismantled condition with many parts missing is converted into in to a Plano milling SPM for machining the inner walls of the traction motor housing. A specially designed milling head reaches inner walls of the motor housing through an extended reach & a right angle attachment. An in-built 3 axes feed mechanism facilitates positioning as well and feed & depth of cut. The job clamping fixture is mounted on a rotary table to facilitate machining of all the inner surfaces of the motor body. This converted Plano miller has saved our customer an expensive floor boring machine. Whenever required, this Plano miller can be used for all general purpose Plano milling application.
