Hindu Cremation Ceremony In Hinduism, the Panchmahabhuttas are the five great elements of antiquity (ingredients of the material component of the universe). They include Akash (ether), Vayu (air), Tejas (fire), Ap (water), and Prithivi (earth). Hindu cremation ceremony is intended to dissolve the material bond (attachment) between the Atman (soul) and the physical body so that the Atman can have a smooth transition to the astral world, upon the death of the physical body. The Atman develops attachment with the physical body during its life on earth and its transition to the astral world upon the death of the physical body becomes a painful affair. Through the power of the Vedic mantras, the cremation ceremony lessens the pain the Atman suffers when separated from the physical body.
The cremation ceremony, hindu cremation services also provides psychological healing to the mourners of the departed soul. The Hindu mode is that the sons or the sons of the nearest kindred must perform these parting ceremonies. As soon as all hope of life is given up, the priest summons all the sons to sit by the side of the dying father. To avoid confusion, let us suppose the dying party to be the father, and that his sons perform the rites. Certain donations are first given to the Brahmans. A lighted lamp, a vessel full of sessamum seed, a vessel filled with oil, a cow milk and its calf -these four must be given, or if person is too poor to buy a cow, he must at least give a couple of rupees. These donations are considered to be most effective in washing away the sins of the dying man, and as a corollary, he who receives the gifts is supposed to inherit the sins of the dying person.
Hence, it is very difficult to find persons to receive the donations voluntarily, and to induce the acceptance of them, large fees have sometimes to be offered. the men who accept the bribes are Brahmans of very inferior social scale, who appear with hideous faces which proclaim that the average luster of their caste has left them long ago. The follows the sacred bath the purify the soul and atone for this sins of the dying person - it is called the river or Sea bath, as the person dying happened to be near a river or the sea and fees are paid to Brahmans, who are supposed to perform the ablutions.
A particular feature of the Hindu ritual, cremation ceremony is the preparation of rice balls (pinda) offered to the spirit of the dead person during memorial services. In part these ceremonies are seen as contributing to the merit of the deceased, but they also pacify the soul so that it will not linger in this world as a ghost but will pass through the realm of Yama, the god of death.

A shraadh, hindu death rituals, atma shraadh, shradh ceremony in honor and for the benefit of deceased relatives, observed at fixed periods and on occasions of rejoicing as well as of mourning. Libations and offerings of pinds (cake or ball of meal, flour or rice offered to spirits of ancestors, oblation to ancestors offered by nearest surviving relates) are made to the spirits of the deceased and of food and gifts to Brahman officiates and to relatives.
The Shraadh performed for the pitars or manes during the Pitra Paksha (the dark fornight of the month of Asauj) has a distinctive effect. It is said that Lord Yama, the god of death gave this direction that the donation and food given during the Pitra Paksha must reach the spirits of the deceased at once and straight. The Pitra Paksha shraadh is organized for all the deceased relatives. It is said that the donation and the food reaches all the deceased ancestors of the person who performs the shraadh. If ‘Tarpana’ (a religion observance: the offering of libation of water to the gods or to the spirits of one’s ancestors) is done on the last day of the Pitra Paksha, its effect reaches even to those persons who have died and who had no issues.
Such persons who did not do any act of virtue or goodness in their whole life and because of this they remain deprived of all comforts and conveniences in Pitra Loka (the abode of the deceased spirits) have the gains of ‘Shraadh’ performed during the Pitra Paksha. Besides this, the donation and food offered during this period reachest the spirits even of those persons whose date of death is not known and due to their annual ‘Shraadh’ is not performed. Its gain is obtained also by the persons killed in a violent incident.
“THE PITRA PAKSHA (THE DARK FORNIGHT OF THE MONTH ASAUJ WHEN RITES ARE PERFORMED IN HONOUR OF DECEASED ANCESTORS) IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IN THE HINDU RELIGION. IT IS THE BELIEF THAT SHRAADH PERFORMED IN THIS PAKSHA (FORNIGHT) FOR THE GRATIFICATION OF PITRAS (MANES) HAS DISTINCTIVE EFFECT. IT IS ALSO BELIEVED THAT THE DONATION AND GRAINS ETC. GIVEN IN THIS PAKSHA REACHES DIRECT TO THE MANES AS YAMA, THE GOD OF DEATH HAS HIMSELF DIRECTED NOT TO PUT HINDRANCE AND OBSTACLE IN IT ”.
