The name comes from the Greek word onyx, which means nail of a finger or claw. It is a member of the chalcedony family, which also includes carnelian, agate, bloodstone, etc. Occurring naturally in a variety of colors, onyx is polished to enhance appearance. It is a member of the quartz family.

limestone is usually not made of sediment. The limestone is built from the tiny calcite skeletons of microscopic organisms in shallow seas. Limestone is typically formed over many years at the bottom of oceans or lakes from the accumulation of shells, bones and other calcium rich goods. The calcium in the bones and shells combines with carbon dioxide in the water to boom calcium carbonate, which is the basic mineral structure of all limestone.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock with grains between 1/16 mm and 2 mm in size. Sandstone doesn't indicate any particular mineral, but in practice, sandstone is usually almost all quartz. 

These are typically the result of quartzitic stone being eroded and redeposited by either wind or water. Riverbeds, ocean beaches and sand dunes will all eventually become Sandstone. Natural sandstone is typically the youngest of the quartz based stones.
