These cranes are widely used where overhead runways are very long and costly to erect, and difficult to maintain in alignment. Also it is comparatively easy and inexpensive to extend the length of the runway and therefore increases the working area of the crane. Most gantry crane installations are outdoors. The initial cost of a gantry crane may be double than that of an overhead crane and must be equated against the additional cost of an overhead runway.

Of the above Deck- We use Leg Gantries, which are most commonly used type for both tracks and on ground level and the trolley travel between the legs only. Such types of constructions permit handling loads outside the area bounded by the runway rails, but the load mayor may not be carried through the led. Other than this, the Semi Gantry construction is possible for both the Deck-leg and through Leg type. These type of cranes have legs of unequal length to operate on rails at different levels.
