Process Indicators are intended to be placed on the outside of a pack/pouch or item to differentiate a "processed" from an "unprocessed" item. The Chemical Process indicator changes colour when exposed in the steriliser. The ProChem Process Indicator tapes from RAVEN Biological Laboratories Inc,USA are 510k notified and meet AAMI, EN and ISO guidelines as a Process Indicator. The tapes have good adhesion to woven and non woven fabrics.

• In the Steam/Autoclave Tape the diagonal white stripes change to Dark Brown/Black after exposure to steam. The colour change is after 10 minutes at 121^o C and after 2 minutes at 132-134^o C. It is available in rolls of 50 mts in standard widths of 12 mm and 18 mm.
• The letters “GAS” in the ETO Indicator tape change from Brown to GREEN when exposed to ETO gas-the complete colour change is in 45 min @ 600 mg/Lt, 40-60% Relative Humidity and 54^o C. It is available in rolls of 50 mts in standard width of 18 mm.

The Raven Bowie Dick Type Air Removal Test Pack is intended to evaluate the performance of the Air Removal (vacuum) system of Pre-Vacuum equipped Steam Sterilizers. It is a Pre-assembled,Ready to use and disposable test pack. After exposure, unwrap pack and remove the indicator sheet for your records.
This product has 510K notification and meets AAMI, EN-867-3 and ISO 11140 air removal test. The ink used on the Indicator Sheet is a Lead Free Ink and hence safer for medical personnel and the environment. The color change is distinct and is non-reversible from pink to black  which is easy to interpret.

A FAILED test is clearly seen when the colour change of the Radiating pattern is not fully complete and has a pinkish tinge at the centre. This incomplete colour change is on account of the presence of a thin air film which acts as a barrier to the Steam penetration.

A PASSED test is one where the colour change in Radiating pattern is total from Pink to Black. This implies that the vacuum has been achieved on account of the complete Air Removal from this Steam steriliser.

Again an excellent product from RAVEN Biological Laboratories Inc, USA, these Chemical Integrators are placed within a pack/ pouch to verify that sterilization conditions have been met at the point of placement. These integrators complete colour change after sufficient exposure to the relevant critical parameters.The colour change is complete at or beyond exposure needed to kill a Biological Indicator.

a) ProChem SSI – Steam Sterilisation Integrator:
The colour change is complete after sufficient exposure to the 3 critical parameters: Steam, Time & Temperature. At 121^oC it functions as a Process Indicator and the complete colour change is in 10 minutes. Complete colour change takes place in 3.0-3.5 minutes @ 132-135^OC when it functions as an Integrator. It is 510k notified and meets AAMI, EN 867-1 Class D, EN 867-2 and ISO 11140-1 Class 5 Integrator.

b) ProChem EO- Ethylene Oxide Integrator:
Here the colour change is complete after sufficient exposure to 4 critical parameters: EO gas concentration, Relative Humidity, Time and Temperature. Acceptable for use in 100% EO or one of the HCFC blends.In the picture above the incomplete colour change shows FAIL at 15 minutes (600 mg/L, 40-60% RH and Temp @ 54^oC).

The full colour change as seen in the picture above(where the changed colour is as dark as or darker than the reference colour in the triangular portion) shows PASS at 45 minutes (600 mg/L, 40-60% RH and Temp @ 54^oC).
This test is easy to interpret; colour change is distinct and non- reversible. It has 510k notification and meets AAMI, EN 867-1 Class D and ISO 11140-1 Class 5 Integrator.

ProTest is a self contained Biological Indicator for use in either Steam or Ethylene Oxide (EO/ETO) sterilization. Each unit is made up of a Plastic container with a cap, a crushable glass ampoule containing recovery media and a paper strip inoculated with spores.

ProTest ETO :
It is intended for use in EO sterilization where the EO gas concentration is 600 mg/ lt, Relative Humidity (RH) is 60% and the temperature is 54^oC. The paper strip contains Bacillus Atrophaeus spores (Strength log 6) (ATCC # 9372) and the Incubation period is 48 hours.

ProTest Steam :
It is intended for use in Steam sterilization at 121^oC gravity sterilizers and in 121^oC – 135^oC prevacuum cycles.  The paper strip contains G.Stearothermophillus spores (ATCC # 7953) (both Log 5 & Log 6 strength) and the incubation period is 24 hours.

For both Steam and ETO sterilisation validation tests using the respective Biological Indicators, one also needs to use as a reference a Control Sample of the same batch number which is not exposed to the sterilisation cycle. After exposure to the sterilisation cycle, both the Control Sample and the exposed Vial should be incubated for the prescribed duration to check for signs of growth.

A Failed Sterilisation Cycle is one where the Test Unit exhibits turbidity and/or colour change to or toward yellow.

A Passed Sterilisation Cycle is where the Test Unit retains its original colour ( i.e Green for ProTest ETO and Purple for ProTest Steam ).It indicates that the sterilisation parameters have been met.  

Please note that the Control Unit should exhibit turbidity and/or colour change to or toward Yellow since it has not been exposed to the sterilisation cycle. If the control unit does not show growth consider the whole test invalid.
