Bio solids are a by-product of waste water treatment. As sewage makes its way through the different treatment processes, solids are removed from the waste water stream and broken down using mechanical processes and bacterial action. Both processes significantly reduce the volume of solids in the waste water stream, and allow for discharge of clear water. Solids that remain at the end of the treatment process are called bio solids.

Waste to Energy (WTE) is a range of processes usually associated with municipal waste (but also used for industrial waste) where the waste is burned, gasified or digested at a high temperature. Heat energy is recovered from these processes (usually in the form of heat) and is reclaimed to produce steam and/or generate electricity.
