Time Domain Reflectometer : Reflectometer T-510

Reflectometer T-510 is a Laptop based Digital Time Domain Reflectometer for pre-location of faults in power Cables. The device has two working modes namely IMPULSE MODE and PULSE ECHO MODE. Pulse echo mode is useful only for open and short types of faults by injecting low voltage pulses.

How to use Reflectometer with Surge Generator

Pre-Location Scope:

Pre-location Reflectometer T-510 to assist power cable fault location technicians in pre-locating and pre-determining distances to faults existing in power cables. It gives a direct reading in meters or kilometres to the fault position. Fault distances can also be determined from the far end of the cable by simply moving two cursors to any two points on the display screen. It is capable of locating low resistance or high resistance faults with the help of Surge Generator.

Available Measurement Methods:
1. PEM ( Pulse Echo Method)
Low Voltage Methods of Fault Locating
Induces low-voltage pulses into cable. Capture the impedance change along the length of cable under test. Very useful for locating length of the cable, open-circuit, short circuit or very low resistance faults.
2. ICM Method
ICM is most suited for High resistance, earth and intermittent faults. It uses high impulse current to develop a momentary ARC that gives a measurement of fault distance. TII’s Reflectometer in conjugation with Surge Generator has a success rate of above 95%.
3. ARC Method (Optional):
ARC method is a combination of PEM & ICM. ARC formations on surging results in short-circuit at fault point which is detected by Pulse super imposed on high voltage surge. Reference graph is compared with reflected graphs after surging & point of diversion (NEGATIVE) gives distance to fault. Distance measurement is as simple as in PEM.
4. Decay Method
DECAY method suitable for Flashing/spark over faults. Ionization in these faults is prolonged and hence ICM or ARM is not helpful. Transient developed due to sudden discharge of capacitors is captured. 100% results in only 1 or 2 sparks.

Cable Fault Pre-Locator

Reflectometer T510 is a Laptop based Digital Time Domain Reflectometer for pre-location of faults in power Cables. Its state-of-art technology makes it easy to use and yet most reliable for any fault condition. The interactive graphical user interface makes it easy, for even a layman, to pre-locate the fault distance. Serial Port makes the device extremely flexible.

The device has two working modes namely IMPULSE MODE and PULSE ECHO MODE. Pulse echo mode is useful only for open and shot types of faults. The impulse mode when used with surge generator T-1005, T-1016, T-1020 & T-1032 to pre-locate fault distance of almost all types of faults including open, short and intermittent faults by way of ICM Method.

The software provides a huge storage capacity so that you may use the Reflectometer T-510 test result for future reviews & analysis. The innovative feature of software displays LAST TWO waveforms for comparison purposes. The easy to use cursor makes it simple to pre-locate the fault distance. Limited Burning Capability (DC High Voltage Testing)
Limited Burning Capability is integral part of Surge Generator T-1032(10). It's allows to burn down the insulation of cable by Limited Burning Capability. The Limited Burning Capability enables to change a high resistance fault to a low resistance fault in underground Power cables. Thus allowing Reflectometer T-510 to be used for low resistance fault pre-location.

Built in ARC Reflection Filter (Optional)
ARC Reflection Filter is inbuilt in Surge Generator. ARC reflection filter used for fault location in low, medium and high voltage power cables. The used inductive ARM (Arc Reflection Method) technology is a result of a discharge of the surge generator and the in the integrated inductivity and causes a low resistive arc at the fault spot. Simultaneous the ARC Reflection Filter protects the Reflectometer from the high voltage in the cable.

Thumper for Pinpointing of Fault:
The surges produced help in pinpointing the fault and tracing the route of the cable when used with acoustic DIGIPOINT.
Surge generator generates D.C. high voltage for pressure testing of the underground cables to find out faulty phase and the breakdown voltage with leakage current. 1000 JOULES Energy on 8, 16, 32 KV Range.

TDR Mode: (Only Reflectometer T-510 is require)
ICM /DECAY Mode:
In the Impulse Current Mode a high voltage discharge generated by a surge generator is applied to a faulty cable until the fault breaks down.

Surge Generator with Digipoint for Pinpointing Of exact fault point
In most cases, the low voltage cables have a length quite limited (average not more than 200 meters) and then the solution faster and more convenient to locate the fault point is to take advantage of the acoustic method that can be used when the failure occurred between phase to phase or phase to the screen.
