Voluntary Services

Besides General Education, Vocational Education is also imparted to them. We have got the following Training centres under the supervision of Expert Teachers.

a) Weaving Section for boys and girls

b) Two Tailoring Sections for Boys and Girls

c) Carpentry Section for Boys

d) Cane-Work Section for Boys

all the above sections are run under the Refuge Technical School which is Aided by the Directorate of Technical Education and Training, Govt. of West Bengal.

Apart from the above centres there are also Computer Centre for Boys and Girls and Wool-knitting Section for Girl. According to the general principal observed by us, we generally discharge inmates over 18 years of age. In many cases they have nowhere to  as there is no after-care arrangement for them and they are left to lead for themselves. Therefore it is very essential that they should be trained up in such vocational works to enable them to secure employment immediately after discharge from this Home and to support themselves. It would be very beneficial for them if they could be trained up in small industries which would make themselves-supporting and enable them to earn their own livelihood. We have got space which if developed may provide enough room for starting small industries where the boys and girls may be trained up so that they would not be in difficulty in securing employment when they are discharged from the Home.

The home has a small dispensary fairly equipped for the treatment of common diseases under the supervision of an experienced M.B.B.S. part--time Doctor ,and also three other experienced doctors,who are assisted by a resident compounder. Cases requiring constant attention and thorough clinical investigation are sent to the hospital.

The help of the Health Department of the Corporation of Kolkata was obtained for inoculating and vaccinating the inmates of the Refuge against cholera. Triple Antigen injections were also given to all children of the Home of the required age.

Particular care is taken about the health of the inmates. The weights of the inmates are regularly recorded and placed before the monthly meeting of the Court of Governors and necessary directions are given in case of any report of loss of weight by any inmate and treatment and diet are sanctioned. We are glad to say that the inmates have been keeping good health and recording increase in weight

Generally the inmates do not get any opportunity to go out of the home. For bringing a change in the daily routine the inmates of the home are taken to different Picnic Spots. Sometimes some batches of the inmates are invited to join some open air functions organised by distinguished organisations and generous persons out of which the names of Rotary Club of Kolkata and Lions Club of Kolkata are worth mentioning.

Now a days in every year we do organise for excursion and outing Facilities.

We are fully conscious that the inmates require some diversion from their routine duties to make their lives enjoyable and improve their minds and bodies. The Refuge has a cultural unit called “Dipak Sangha” organised by the inmates of the institution under the supervision of the Superintendent who is its President. The Sangha observes and celebrates various functions and ceremonies including seasonal pujas and birth day anniversaries, the Republic Day and the Independence Day. In the spacious yard of the institution Foot—ball, Cricket, Volley—ball, Badminton, Haddodo and other games are played. In the girls’ section music and dancing are practised and in the annual function they show their proficiency. Late Prof. Rajkumar Chakraborty who was associated with the institution for a very long time created an endowment fund to encourage the inmates and prizes are awarded out of the income from the endowment.

There is a small library which is very popular with the inmates and is maintained mainly by books donated through various well-wishers.

For the last few years the inmates of the home participated in a traffic training competition Sponsored by the Kolkata Police very successfully.
