Thorn – lighting people and places
Thorn is a first class, global brand for complex indoor and outdoor lighting projects.
The company’s mission is to improve the quality of life by providing the best quality lighting for people’s work, leisure, education, healthcare and travel in and around our countryside, cities, buildings and monuments.
Travelling Light III
Thorn’s Travelling Light III tour of Europe ended, as it began, with impressive customer numbers in Lyon on 25 June 2009. The roadshow, which lasted for nine months, consisted of a mobile showroom that took the latest innovative lighting products to the customer, rather than vice versa. The vehicle and its impressive 10m high presentation dome visited 38 events in 12 countries, covering over 25,000 kilometres.Over 3,400 customers, including contractors, clients, architects and specifiers - were able to see the latest product developments and take in a varied programme of supporting presentations. The performance, efficiency and comfort (PEC) programme received an excellent response from many participants, who learned how sustainability will impact on tomorrow's lighting.
After a short break - for an exterior focussed revamp - the Thorn team is looking forward to the Travelling Lightshow branching out into Germany for the first time in September and October 2009 - dates and venues to be announced. The tour supports the summer announcement of Thorn's new German partner for outdoor lighting products, Vulkan Außenleuchten GmbH, part of the Hess Group.

At a meeting at Roden Crater, Arizona (USA) in February, an international jury selected this year's winners of the Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment. The Austrian lighting group's award, which carries a purse of EUR 140,000, honours sustainable solutions in architecture and engineering that make pioneering contributions to the future quality of lifeIn the "Built Environment" category, the jury chose to commend the Brazilian architectural practiceTriptyque for its ecologically and architecturally pioneering office building and gallery "HARMONIA 57". The award in the "Research & Initiative" category went to the non-profit design studio Terreform ONE, founded by Mitchell Joachim and Maria Aiolova, for the research project "New York City Resource & Mobility", a visionary master plan that maps out a sustainable future for New York City.
"It is both extremely important and a great pleasure for us to be able to present our award for sustainability and humanity once again this year. Ensuring the efficient use of resources and arriving at pioneering solutions in the fields of architecture and urban planning are challenges that will accompany us for many years to come. I am delighted that, in their selection this year, the jury have sent out a clear signal that smaller projects which adopt innovative approaches can also prove an important source of inspiration. We need to look beyond our current needs and see the challenges of the future in their full context, as is reflected in the winning project in the "Research & Innovation" category," explained Zumtobel Group CEO and jury member Andreas Ludwig.
