Lac is the resinous secretion of a microscopic tiny insect, popularly known as Laccifer Lacca. These insects belong to the family of bugs of the super family “coccoidea”. Three hundred thousand insects on an average produces one kilogram of lac resin. The basic raw material is Sticklac, which is converted into commercial grades of seedlac and shellac.

The yield (40%-60%) depends on various factors like host trees, area of cultivation, climatic condition and others. Lacs are of various types such as seedlac, sticklac, shellac and out of these, shellac finds extensive usage in both domestic and commercial fields such as:

• Surface coating as under coat, primer, sealer, French polish, leather dressing, fruit coating and others
• Textiles: Used in stiffening of hats
• Printing: Used in flexographic ink, waterproof ink, photo engraving and many more
• Jewelry: Used in making bangles, earrings, necklaces, jewelry box and others
• Cosmetic & Pharmaceuticals: Lacs are used in hair lacquer, hair sprays (Pump sprays or aerosol sprays with propan-butan or DME), hair setting lotions, hair shampoo, mascara, eyeliners, nail polishes, lipsticks, micro encapsulation by coacervation of fragrances and perfume oils, coating for enteric pills, dental base places and others
• Decorations: Lacs are used in making mirrors, key chains, showpieces, pens, coasters and many more
• Food: Useful in coating of confections, chewing gum, candles, cakes, eggs, coating of citrus fruits and apples, printing inks for eggs and cheese
• Electrical: Used in micanite and insulating varnish
• Engineering: Primarily used for grinding wheels, rivet and plate sealer
• Photography: Useful in dry mounting tissue paper and protective varnish
• Rubber: Used as a stiffening agent, surface finish and others
• Paper: Lacs are used in paper varnish, playing cards and many more
• Adhesive: Ideally used for gasket cement, sealing wax, pyrotechnic optical cement and many more

• Its film exhibits excellent adhesion to a various surfaces, possessing high gloss, hardness and strength
• Dissolves in various alkaline solutions or rapidly drying alcoholic solvents but is resistant to other solvents particularly hydrocarbons

Our state-of-the-art infrastructure located at Khunti, Jharkhand, is one of the best lac growing areas of India, capable of producing 100 tones of shellac per month. The Shellac needs to be cooled down and are thus stored in air-conditioned warehouses which maintain temperature between 14 -18 degree centigrade, preventing Shellac from blocking in the hot weather.
