Heat Process:
Pure lac is procured by melting seedlac by steam heat and squeezing the soft molten lac through filter by means of hydraulic presses. The molten lac is then stretched with the use of rollers into long and continuous sheets. It is then broken into pieces to form small flakes.

Solvent Process:
Through the solvent process, the insoluble purities are separated by dissolving the lac in a suitable solvent, usually industry alcohol. This solution is then filtered using fine cloth and by boiling the solution the alcohol is recovered. The shellac procured is then stretched to the required thickness on a roller. Dewaxed or partly dewaxed shellac can be processed by this process and the wax content may be as low as 0.2%.
