A tie rod, a slender structural unit is used as a tie and (in most applications) is capable of carrying tensile loads only. The rod with an inner and an outer end is a vital component of the steering mechanism in a vehicle. The spokes on a bicycle’s wheels are tie rods. As the ratio of rod length to the radius of gyration of its cross section is normally quite large, it would likely buckle under the action of compressive forces. Transmission of force from the steering center link or the rack gear to the steering knuckle by the tie rod will cause the wheel to turn. The outer end of the rod connects with an adjusting sleeve allowing the length of the tie rod to be adjustable. This adjustment is used for setting a vehicle’s alignment angle.

It joins the center link to the steering knuckle on cars with conventional suspension systems and with recirculating ball steering gears. It also connects the end of the rack to the steering knuckle. The tie rod plays important role in making the wheels to turn by transmitting force from the steering center link or the rack gear to the steering knuckle.
