International Centre for the Advancement of Manufacturing Technology (ICAMT) is a technology centre of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). While UNIDO's mandate is to promote and accelerate sustainable development in developing countries and economies in transition in general, ICAMT focuses on the diffusion and advancement of the manufacturing technology. The initiatives assist the industry in enhancing its product and process technological performance in the areas of manufacture, productivity, design, and quality. It will particularly aim at building up relevant absorptive capacity of machine tool industry to become globally competitive.The programmes are spread across different industrial sectors including Machine tools, Foundry etc.
Currently, ICAMT is working on an initiative to strengthen the competitiveness of the Indian machine tool industry and enhance cost-effective production of high quality machine tools. The initiative would be focusing on technological upgrading leading to the growth and enhanced share of the industry in the global market.
The programme intervention was initiated in early 2010 and is intended to address the factors of low volume operations, inconsistent process capability, quality and reliability, cost cutting and R&D in the SMEs in machine tools sector. 115 SME machine tool manufacturers spread across the clusters of Delhi, Batala, Ludhiana, Hyderabad, Pune, Rajkot and Bangalore are targeted to be the current beneficiaries of this initiative. The programme is intended to address technology needs through structured exposure, training, hand-holding and other support services.
In Hyderabad cluster, 10 units are identified and a diagnostic study is completed as fist phase of the programme. A perspective plan is prepared for each unit along with a general report to address the common issues pertaining to all units. Implementation of perspective plan is under progress.
