They, in the case of platinum known variously as PRTs and PRT100s, are the most popular RTD type, nearly linear over a wide range of temperatures and some small enough to have response times of a fraction of a second. They are among the most precise temperature sensors available with resolution and measurement uncertainties or ±0.1 °C or better possible in special dimensions.


Usually they are provided Encapsulated in probes for temperature sensing and measurement with an external Indicator,Controller or Transmitter, or enclosed inside other devices where they measure temperature as a part of the device's function, such as a temperature controller or precision thermostat.


Where |t| is the absolute value of the rtd's temperature in °C.
Below are examples of these tolerances for a nominal 100 ohm (at 0°C) platinum rtd.


The din standard recognizes tolerance classes, they are:


Din class a tolerance: ±[0.15 0.002 * |t| ] °C
Din class b tolerance: ±[0.30 0.005 * |t| ] °C

Platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors or RTDs for short, are wire wound and thin film devices that measure temperature. The hotter they become, the larger or higher the value of their electrical resistance.

Thermocouples

 A thermocouple is a sensor for measuring temperature. It consists of two dissimilar metals, joined together at one end, which produce a small unique voltage at a given temperature. This voltage is measured and interpreted by a thermocouple thermometer.


Thermocouples are available in different combinations of metals or Calibrations. The seven most common calibrations are J, K, T, E , R , S , B. Each calibration has a different temperature range and environment, although the maximum temperature varies with the diameter of the wire used in the thermocouple.

Because thermocouples measure in wide temperature ranges and can be relatively rugged, they are very often used in industry. The following criteria are used in selecting a thermocouple:


  • Temperature range
  • Chemical resistance of the thermocouple or sheath material
  • Abrasion and vibration resistance
  • Installation requirements (may need to be compatible with existing equipment; existing holes may determine probe diameter).


Sheathed thermocouple probes are available with one of three junction types: grounded, ungrounded or exposed. At the tip of a grounded junction probe, the thermocouple wires are physically attached to the inside of the probe wall. This results in good heat transfer from the outside, through the probe wall to the thermocouple junction. In an ungrounded probe, the thermocouple junction is detached from the probe wall. Response time is slowed down from the grounded style, but the ungrounded offers electrical isolation.

Our company is engaged in manufacturing Thermo wells / sleeves that are designed to meet BSI, DIN, ASME standards. The different types of Thermo wells that we present to our customers are:

• Drilled bar stock thermo well
Their bodies are machined and drilled out of solid bar stock resulting in a non-welded water tight unit. These are available in different configuration styles like tapered, steeped or straight and machined. This ensures compatibility with process equipment.

• Flange mounted thermo well
We present flange mounted thermo well that are as per ANSI b 16.5 standard and have pound ratings from 150 ib / sq in to 2500 ib / sq. in. We also offer flanges as per other standards like DIN, JIS, ring joint facing (RTJ) and cover flange.

• Threaded mounted thermo well
We present an assortment of thermo wells that have been machined from solid bar stock. We have the expertise to design and fabricate them as per customer's requirement. The most common variety of threads that we supply are npt, bsp metric etc.

• Pocket thermo well
This type of thermo well offers a low cost alternative to solid drilled construction, where high pressure is not a consideration for design. These pocket thermo wells are fabricated using high quality seamless tubes or schedule pipes and their ends are sealed with a welded plug.
