The Glass and Ceramics Industry is also a large user of Zinc Oxide in glazes and enamels. In glass it acts both a network 'former' and 'modifier'. As a 'former' it tends to increase the chemical durability of silicate glass. It is used in phosphate glasses, chemically resistant glasswares, glass metal seals and certain fibre glass compositions. It is used as stabilizer for cadmium sulphide and cadmium selenide during the heat treatment and thus the glass retains its yellow or red colour. Zinc Oxide finds extensive use in enamels. It regulates the co-efficient of expansion, improves glaze and texture, enhances opacity and whiteness. It is also used extensively in porcelain enamel frits and pottery and sanitaryware glazes.

The ability to absorb ultraviolet light makes zinc oxide an active ingredient of choice in suntan lotions.

Zinc Oxide is one of the most powerful whitening pigments found today. It adds a bright white color to lotions, creams, and sunscreens. When using Zinc be sure not to add no more then 25% to the total mixture/recipe. Adding to much will cause a spotty appearance to your cosmetics and may actually cause more harm then good. It should also be noted that if your cosmetics contain too much it will leave a very white, opaque appearance on the skin when applied, this is especially problematic for sunscreens. For best results we recommend 1-2 tablespoons for a 1-gallon batch and 2-3 tablespoons for a 2-5 gallon batch.

Zinc Oxide is a component in many formulations of durables and protective paints. One of its outstanding values in the finished coatings is its opacity to ultraviolet light which improves weatherability. The oxide is not discoloured by sulphur compounds in the atmosphere as are some lead pigments. It protects the paint film from mildew, improves resistance to abrasion and also neutralizes the harmful acids formed by aging of hte vehicle. Zinc Oxide, being of amphoteric nature, reacts with organic acids to from soaps which acts as dispersing agent. Its catalytic properties hasten polymerization for msot exterior coatings and fine particles produce excessive reactivity which protect cracking and flaking of the coating as its agent.

Zinc oxide is well known for its ability to neutralize acid and for its mild bactericidal properties, making it an ideal component in body cream/antiseptic healing cream to help reduce soreness and redness. It is also used in medical tapes and plasters, some toothpaste formulations and in dental cements. And, last but not least, zinc oxide is incorporated in dietary supplements and vitamin tablets as source of the essential micronutrient zinc for the human body.

The Rubber Industry is the largest user an activator of the organic accelerator. It is used to shorten the time of vulcanization or as an accelerator for speciality rubbers like neoprene and poly sulfide. As a reinforcing pigment in rubber it has the advantage of low heat generation, good heat conductivity, reinforcement at elevated temperatures and resistance to aging by ultraviolet light.
The inherent qualities of low water absorption, high resistivity, low power factor and medium dielectric constant in it make it suitable for preparing rubber insulated cables. Zinc Oxide is also used in pressure sensitive adhesive and mechanical tapes. Special grade of Zinc Oxide is used surgical tapes. Generally it is employed at levels of three to five parts by weight per hundred parts of rubber.
