In this form of ancient art designs are made using a kalam, which is a sharp, pointed bamboo stick padded with cotton or hair and is tied with a string on one end to regulate the flow of color. Our designs are produced with dyes instead of making use of the looms. The traditional colors that we use are iron black, indigo blue and madder red made from vegetable dyes. Our artisans create beautiful patterns with pens (kalam) using different colors.

In this traditional art form a warp or weft or even both are tied in such a way that when they are woven together the desired pattern appears on the fabric. Our artisans are deft in this technique in which areas of the warp or weft are reserved by tying them with thread before weaving, and then dyed. Our craftsmen take care while tying resist areas with water repellent material like inner tubes of cycles that are cut into thin strips as the precision of the wrapping determines the clarity of the design.
