Good Painting Practice
- Open the paint containers carefully, stir the contents very well with hand or mechanical stirrer to give uniform consistency.
- If required add recommended Thinner to adjust application viscosity. Consult paint supplier for Thinner and thinning ratio. A wrong Thinner can spoil the paint.
- The paint should be filtered/sieved through a suitable mesh/cloth before use.
- Clean all containers, implements, spray guns etc.before and after use.
- Ensure that the article/the surface to be painted is clean before painting.
- Normally Air Assisted Spray requires lower viscosity than Brush application.
- Thinned down paint should not be kept for longer periods since it is likely to result in settling of pigments/solids due to gravity.
- Correct spray gun and air flow adjustments are necessary to get uniform surface and smooth coating. Adjust distance between spray gun & surface to approximate 10” - 12” to get a proper spray pattern.
- Use wide vertical pattern for large surfaces and round pattern for smaller articles.
- Stoving paints should be given sufficient flash off time to allow solvent evaporation, as recommended by manufacturer, before stoving/baking to achieve the best results.
- On repainting jobs ensure that the previous coatings & loose particles are thoroughly sanded down and removed before fresh painting.
- Ensure there is enough ventilation in painting area.
- Do not paint in highly humid atmosphere, if possible.
- Do not expose eyes & skin to solvent vapors, In case of exposure wash thoroughly with fresh water.
- Use safety gadgets like hand-gloves; face/nose masks etc.while painting.
- While using two - pack systems:
- Mix the component exactly as per recommended mixing ratio.
- Mix only enough quantity that is required for job in hand. Any left-over paint will be wasted since pot life of mixture is limited as specified.
- Keep the mixture for maturation as specified before use.
- Clean all implements like brush, spray gun, pot etc. immediately after use since any left over paint will dry hard and make the implements unserviceable.
Safety Precautions
SAFETY PRECAUTION
As it is known, some of the ingredients like solvents, some of the pigments etc. contained in the paint and allied products are potentially hazardous to human health and fire if not handled properly. Though the nature of most of the ingredients have remained unchanged over the years, large production rates of painted articles with modern application methods have increased the exposure of painters and other people in the vicinity and the risk of fire or explosion to a greater extent. But by following some elementary safety and handling precautions the risk can be minimized considerable, if not all together eliminated.

- Ground / Earth all Electrical and Hydraulic Equipments.
- Avoid all sparks and static electricity.
- All used rags etc. with solvent or oil should be kept in closed containers.
- Do not try to extinguish fire with water. Use dry powder or CO2 extinguishers.
- Do not direct fire extinguishers against persons. Use fire blankets or water showers.
- Do not use Halogen containing solvents or cleaning solvents in spray equipment with aluminum.
- Use proper cloths.
- Follow directions for use indicated on labels / data sheets.
- Avoid direct contact of liquid paint and solvents.
- Use rubber gloves, safety goggles, nose masks, protective creams etc. on exposed body parts like arms, face, neck etc.
- While painting in confirmed and narrow spaces like tanks, ship holds enclosed rooms etc. adequate ventilation should be provided, apart from proper lighting, helper with like - line, periodic interruption of work etc.
